  1. 1. turn ignition on but do not start the car.

    2. set odometer to total miles, not trip A or B.

    3. turn the ignition to off.

    4. press and hold the trip mile reset button.

    5. while holding the button, turn the ignition to on (not start!).

    6. continue to hold down the reset button until the MAINT reminder light flashes.

    7. After if flashes, it should go out.

    8. then turn the ignition to off.

    9. go have a beer.

  2. if i get a set of aftermarket rims, can the stock tpms device be removed from the stock wheels and placed on the aftermarket rims?

Yes they can only if the aftermarket rims are TPMS acceptable. Best thing to do is check with the manufacturer of the new rim to see if the new rim will proper hold the sensors.

  3. its behind door #1.

If it is in the same place as the 06 GS300 it is a cannister style filter with a cartridge (not a spin on) that is just behind a flop down trap door panel which is just inside of the left front (driver's) wheel when looking at the car from below.

  4. My worst nightmare has come true again.

    Here is what happened.

My wife picked up her friend at the airport ( her husband was at work and could not make it).

the dash started making noises again until she made it to the expressway. She was so embarassed she had to increase the fan speed and also the volume on the radio.

It is getting so annoying and upsetting now. guess she should have taken the RX instead of the GS.

If I trade it now I loose 25 grand straight . my worst investment ever. Its like investing in GMs stock.

Call me next time, I will pick everyone up at the airport. My GS doesn't rattle or creak at all.

  5. I contacted my dealership for two reasons:

    1. to see if the Fuel Rail replacement in Nov 2007 was the same as the above and

    2. if my vehicle falls in the VIN range that is specific to this recall.

Here is the response from my dealership:

    Dear Stephen,

In regards to your inquiry, the most recent Lexus service campaigns 9LA, 9LB, and 9LC do apply to your 2006 GS300 according to the VIN # you have provided. Service campaign 9LA is a different campaign than the one that was sent out in 2007. The fuel injection line is made up of different components and the fuel delivery pipe is a different part than the part that was changed previously. Based on the VIN # provided and the VIN # range for the service campaign 9LB your vehicle does need the rear brake caliper inspection and possible replacement even if noise is not heard from the brakes at this time. In 2006 the power steering gear unit was replaced due to a service campaign. Service campaign 9LC does require the Electric Power Steering Assembly (EPS) to be replaced. Although gradual increase in the steering is not noticeable at this time it is possible in the future; therefore, Lexus is requiring replacement of the EPS assembly at this time. I have gone ahead and ordered the parts required for these repairs for you. We will inform you once these parts have come in via phone, email and/or mail. Please feel free to contact me via phone or email if you have any questions or concerns and/or when you are ready to schedule an appointment with Ronni.

We thank you for servicing your vehicle with Herb Chambers Lexus.

As always we appreciate your business and we’re looking forward to hearing from you soon!

Looks like I have to have all three done. At least they are paying for it.

    Hey Steviej,

Have you had the recalls completed yet? How long was the car in the shop? Since these items are covered under warranty, I figured since I'm taking it in, they can also attempt to troubleshoot the dashboard creaks, and rattles. Do you know if this is under warranty as well?

    Thanks

I haven't had it done yet because the this service campaign is so new dealerships don't even have replacement parts in stock. Mine have been ordered. They will call me when the parts are in and let me know how long to expect. If longer than I care to wait, they will provide me with a loaner. Your dashboard creaks should be covered under the dash creak TSB (technical service bulletin). If your car is still under original warranty, then they are definately covered.

Funny though, when I said recall on the phone, they immediately corrected me and said it is a service campaign. I said, "whatever" as long as Lexus is paying for it. As explained by someone in the business, a service campaign is when the maker announces they found the problem and volunterally offers the work. A recall is when the federal government finds that there is sufficient evidence to warrant and change and tells the maker they must resolve a problem. I really don't car. . . . . walks like a duck, smells like a duck, not paying for it.

SSC 9LB Certain 2006 2007 GS and IS Vehicles Rear Brake Caliper Inspection

SSC 9LC Certain2006 2007 GS, IS and RX 400h Vehicles Electric Power Steering Link (EPS) Assembly Replacement

    ******URGENT******

On January 16, 2009, Toyota filed a Defect Information Report (DIR) with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) regarding certain 2006 2007 GS 300/350, 2006 2008 IS 250/350 and 2007 2008 LS 460/460L vehicles. The involved vehicles are equipped with aluminum fuel delivery pipes (fuel rails). Lexus has determined that ethanol fuels with low moisture content will corrode the internal surface of the fuel rails. As this condition progresses the engine malfunction light (MIL) may illuminate. Over time, the corrosion will create a pinhole resulting in fuel leakage. SSC 9LA will be launched to replace the Fuel Delivery Pipes in the affected vehicles.

    There are approximately 43,700 GS 300 (24,500 2WD, 19,200 AWD), 23,700 GS 350 (14,000 2WD, 9,700 AWD), 85,800 IS 250 (54,000 2WD, 31,800 AWD), 24,900 IS 350, and 36,400 LS 460 (25,500 LS 460, 10,900 LS 460L) vehicles involved in the U.S.

Additionally, Lexus is launching two other SSCs.

9LB Certain 2006 2007 model GS and IS vehicles to inspect rear brake calipers. On certain Lexus vehicles, the slide pin in the rear brake calipers may not operate smoothly. If the vehicle continues to be operated under these conditions, the brake pads may make noise.

9LC Certain 2007 GS 450h, 2006 2007 GS, IS and RX 400h vehicles to replace the electric power steering link (EPS) assembly. Certain vehicles may experience a noticeable gradual increase in the steering effort necessary at low speeds when turning the steering wheel to the complete left or right position. This condition may be most perceptible when parking the vehicle.

A dealer package including vital information and reimbursement procedures will be sent to dealers (to the attention of the service manager) today.

Lexus will inform owners of the involved vehicles with a Special Service Campaign notification letter sent via first class mail beginning in late January 2009.

All customer inquires should be directed to the Lexus Customer Assistance Center at 1-800-255-3987.

If you are a dealership associate and have any questions, please contact your District Service and Parts Manager.

  9. I will do drain and fill on my 2002 LExus ES what fluid should I use car has 27000 miles. I have 1993 Lexus GS300 and I use T-IV on drain and fill and car has 230 000 miles now should I use T-IV on 2002 Lexus ES300 thank you.

2002 requires Toyota Type IV tranny fluid.

Just a hint, replace the aluminum crush washer at the tranny plug. Do not reuse the one on there now.

  12. Just wanted to say hello and ask a question. My wife and I just purchased a 2004 ES with 36000 miles on it. It is in perfect shape and we love it except for one pretty big problem . . . road noise. When we test drove the vehicle in downtown Baltimore, we drove over rough city streets and made the mistake of not highway driving so the noise problem wasn't noticed. The car is quiet up to about 35 mph then the humming starts (mostly from the front). I am 90% sure the problem is the tires which are Dean Equus LSI's on the front and Yokohama Geolander G900's on the rear. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I love when previous owners mix and match crappy tires. :chairshot:

Get a set of nice all season radials and you will hear a noticable difference. You will most likely feel a noticable improvement in the handling as well. My last set of tires I had on my 02 ES (basically the same car) were Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S. Awesome tire for the price and pretty decent in light snow and heavy rain.

  14. try adding some fluid anyway. I find that Toyota/Lexus BRAKE lights can come on even if the fluid level is well above the MIN mark on the reservoir. When you step on the brake fluid is forced into the calipers and out of the reservoir. It may be dropping the level low enought to set of the indicator light. When you take you foot off the brake the fluid rises again in the reservoir and then light goes out again.

  15. i may attempt to replace my exhaust manifold and o2 sensor between radiator and engine, by myself. is there anything that i need to know prior to doing so?

    thanks in advance

just use an O2 socket so that you don't crimp the wire coming out of the end of the O2 sensor. this socket has a slot running up the side to allow the wire to stick out. They are only about $12 and a good addition to any auto mechanics tool box.

  16. Hi,

No, they are not under warranty. If at all possible I recommend that you let the authorized dealer do the job. Even though they charge more, one of my friends did it using a mechanic down the street and somehow they did not do it right and he had to take it into the dealer after all.

    TTK

    This is not true.

The brake calipers are covered under warranty, however this is NOT the wear item of the braking system.

The brake pads and brake rotors are what are replaced when your brakes need routine service. Pads and rotors are considered wear items and are not covered under warranty unless there is some manufacturing defect. In that case there would be a TSB issued.

The brake caliper is the device that squeezes the brake pads against the rotors. There are rubber parts on the calipers that can prematurely wear out but should be covered as these are not routinely wearing items.

If you go through the dealership for brake sevice you will pay through the nose for it. Consider going to a Toyota dealership. Same parts for a little less cost. Another possibility is to find a reputable Toyota/Lexus independent around you. There are plenty of highly qualified mechanics out there. But beware, there are plenty of butchers. too.

Personally, I do all my own brake work cause I know what I am doing and I have all the proper tools.

see if you can have the dealer change the filter reminder to notify you at 5k, it may be one of those user defined settings.

My 06 only has the "change oil reminder"which comes on every 5k miles. I don't have a reminder for changing the filter.
