  1. Nevermind figured it out.  Thanks wilhunt

I ordered trunk lifts through e-bay for $35.00 a pair. I had to use a Dremel tool to cut the ball and screw mount from the old lifts. They fit fine but had a lot of power. I would recommend try changing one side first. If you set your beeeer on the spoiler and hit the trunk opener it will launch the beer a bout 15 ft.

But any other suggestions would greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Cool! Sounds like enough lifting power to compensate for additional sound deadening. Would you mind telling us what the brand name is?

  2. i just got in the car today and started hearing the squeal of the power steering. im going to the mechanic for that and front bushingss.

anyone know how much im looking at?

Depends on how you go about fixing it. (PS pump) I did mine in a couple of hours for ~$200. Search to see all of your options.

  3. I have an opportunity to buy a 95 SC400 with 80K miles, salvage title, airbags deployed for $5K.  I have an Audi as my maintanace hog, so I'm not really looking for another.  I currently have a '94 ES300 with 170K on the clock and could probably sell that for $3-4K.  My problem is I know the ES is healthy and can go for another 100K, but I don't know the reliability of the SC, this one in particular.  It has a couple of problems, the when you press AUTO on the A/C it does not turn on the A/C, blows regular air out, but when you turn it to COLD it blows very cold air out.  Also, I think the power steering is out because you have to really put some muscle into turning the car.  My guy says he will fix that problem before he sells it to me though.  Finally, I have a question, can I get replacement airbags and the covers of both the drivers and passenger airbag covers?  Thanks for the advice.

Since I don't own an ES, I can't really compare maintenance costs, but I can tell you that if you need dealer-only work, the Toyota dealerships around here are clueless when it comes to "Soarer," but obviously well versed in "Camry." Just from a production number standpoint, I'd say that the ES is going to be cheaper, but I wouldn't say that the SC is a maintenance hog, but it isn't a Camry, either. IMHO, it's an "Apples to Oranges" comparison anyway. One is a high-performance luxury coupe, while the other is pretty much a warmed up FWD grocery-getter. Personally, I wouldn't buy a salvage title car, especially not a Lexus. Maintenance and TLC from a previous owner's standpoint means too much for me, since any major problem + fixing the known issues could cost you the difference between a salvage title SC and a legit car with service history. From looking at a fair number of salvage title cars, I can tell you that most were never fixed properly enough to be safe, not to mention the inevitable issues such as water leaks, messed up wiring, and poor fitting body panels. I'm guessing that those bags are going to cost you $1500-2k alone.

  4. My changer seems to error more frequently as the temperature goes up. I never have a problem at night, but on an 80+ day, can expect it not to find the beginning of a song, or simply refuse to play altogether. This with burned TDK CDR's that are always designated as Music before the burn process.

  5. Between the two WA threads, I'm pretty confused who will be where and when. I'll be in Bellevue until ~7PM Friday and can meet people wherever they end up. I probably won't have time to check the board, but if anyone wants to call and meet up, my cell is (four-two-five) 231-2966. (Spelled out just in case there's some sort of number bot searching)

  6. I have just discovered that my SC has the "Premium" system as opposed to the Nakamichi system, and would like to hear the difference. If anyone would be so kind as to meet up with me, I'll come to you and kick in $20 for your trouble. This is very important to me, since I'm about to decide wheter to upgrade to the Nak system or go aftermarket. Weeknights work fine for me.

  7. I might be beating a dead horse but I just bought my 92sc400 and I just installed my radio in the dash and it used a normal toyota radio harness. if I remember right its a 70-1764(I will have to double check) But its just a basic 89 and newer toyota harness that could be purchased at CC or BB. I also know how to make the factory sub work after installing a new head unit. If anyone is interested I can post some info. Just as an FYI I install audio/video/security products for a living. :)

    Pics please!

  8. I think I already know the answer to this, but just in case someone out there has a good working knowledge of the Nak internals and is able to lower the hi-pass cutoff for the mid's, I thought I'd try anyway. The situation is, I really like the stock SC Nak system, but after hearing a '98 ES with the Nak and the 5 1/4" front speakers, I'd like to upgrade my front speakers to at least 5 1/4's. Obviously, that would be pointless without the ability to lower the hi-pass to take advantage of the larger speaker. Suggestions? I assume that the ES Nak amp isn't compatible, harness-wise.

  9. i understand where you're coming from bean, and it does make sense.

but if a stock 93 supra registered in at low 13's (13.3) on all stock settings which is 11psi, i can see it doing better when it is boosted around 18psi. you can push the stock even further, but it will crap out after that race for sure...

with a vpc/afc, fmic instead of the stock smic, lsd, adjustable cam gears and so fourth to advance valve timings and getting the stock twins to run optimally, i can see them doing much better than low 13s dont you think??

FWIW, the issue of Road and Track that I have in front of me tested it at 13.7. I'm sure it's possible to go quicker, but a half a second is a lot.

  10. Its all about the design the WRX the evolution are 4 cylinders and there pushing 300 hp, the STI does 0-60 in 4.2.

Its not the size of the engine its the weight of the car and the work done to it

Yeah, it cracks me up that just people seem to think that anything with 8 cylinders is fast. It reminds me of why I always had little respect for V8 owners before I bought my SC. For every 11-second car, there was ten 15-second idiots blabbing about how fast they were. I love me SC, but the fact is, it's a slow !Removed! that isn't going to get much faster without cubic dollars. It's a big, heavy, comfortable cruiser that was never meant to compete with sport compacts or muscle cars. I could care less if someone has a faster Honda, since I didn't buy this car to go fast in. The attitude of "I own a V8, therefore I'm fast" is going to get you laughed at by many a' four-banger, so I'd suggest dropping that attitude or start reaching deep into your wallet.

  11. its only a v6 though

I can't believe in this day and age of information people still say things like this. My "other" car has half the displacement and half the cylinders of my SC, yet still manages to be ~3 seconds quicker 0-60 than my SC. Using the number of cylinders as the only way to judge a car's speed will get you beat in a hurry. Go find yourself a lowly 6-cylinder 996TT to race.

  12. I have tried silicone and the tire endurance tip as well but I did not hear much improvement. I can however put a little forward pressure on the moon roof while driving and I do notice a significant drop in wind nose. All the mounting hardware and sliding hardware is fully secured and I do not feel there is any play in the system. :(

I'd replace the seal, regardless of what the dealer says. My 1992's roof makes almost *zero* noise, even without the shade pulled. Something is definitely wrong.

  13. I'm bringing my 1998 SC400 into the Lexus dealer this Friday to have them work on getting rid of some of the squeaks and tapping sounds that are getting to me. I'm wondering what is the acceptable standard for the amount of wind noise coming through the moonroof with the shade retracted. I'd say that I have a moderate amount of noise but no actual air (4 out of 10). When going across a bridge with wind blowing across the car, the noise level increases. The moonroof looks flush from the top of the car looking down.

So, how much noise do you get through your moonroof at freeway speeds? It's seems noiser than my old Honda Accord.

    Thanks,

I wonder if a rubber softener would help? Quoting skperformance from the ES FAQ:

"also i use meguires tire endurance dressing to help it seal along the sela of all the windows door edges ,trunk and sunroof, once done it will improve the less of air whistle"
