  1. Good question! Like many of us I believe I owned the worst of the worst. I got a great deal on a shiny black used 1962 Pontiac Tempest that had been owned by a priest. It was rear wheel drive with a 4 cylinder engine described as half of a Pontiac v8 (not the better half) and it had a transaxle mounted at the rear. The engine sounded like a threshing machine due to an impossible timing chain design, and the chassis felt like it was going to explode at highway speed due to the driveshaft spinning at the same speed as the engine. Among the numerous problems with this car I replaced the starter several times and I understand GM was having a problem designing a proper starter for this wreck. I'll never forget the bitter cold night driving from New Jersey to Connecticut with my wife and newborn in the car with a couple of stuck valves. The flames were literally sweeping the top of the hood as I stood on the throttle and rode the clutch through the toll booths to keep the engine from stalling. It was an exciting ride and I must say the only time we ever got any heat in the god damned thing. I saved up enough money to get a valve job and put it up for sale the day I got it back from the repair shop. Reflecting back, I'm curious that the priest didn't have this thing exorcised.
  2. Okay....Problems solved. For the code 55 I used a stick to press on the knock sensor connection. This seems to have corrected the problem. For codes 63 & 67 I replaced the transmission shift solenoids. Had to drop the transmission pan to get at them. Also did a fluid (7 Qts. of Toyota type T-IV) and filter change. Now it shifts perfectly and no more blinking OD-OFF. The shift solenoids came in a pair. Part no. 52-9021 from Driveline Service of Las Vegas. Had to pay a bit more ($240.00) than another member cited, but what the heck. Sure beats the cost and hassle of a new transmission.
  3. Do you by any chance recall the part numbers for the speed sensor and solenoid #2? Thanks
  4. Thanks, It may be a few weeks til I get to it. I do appreciate the information.
  5. Thanks. I'm going to pull the EFI fuse long enough to purge the codes and hope for the best. I'm hoping it's just a fluke.
  6. That's good info. Any idea where solenoid #2 and speed sensor are located? I believe I can see two things with electrical connections on the top rear of the transmission. I've looked around for some detailed information and/or images, but so far no luck.
  7. I'm getting the same codes on my 92 LS400 and many of the same symptoms. When the engine reaches operating temperature I switch it off for about 10-15 seconds. On restart the transmission shifts smoothly through all the gears. The problem reappears when it cools down. Have you had any luck in determining what the codes 63 and 67 mean?
  8. I'm new to this site so please bear with me. A few weeks ago I bought a 1992 LS400 with 161,000 miles. Today my Check Engine Light came on so I retrieved the codes and got code 55. All I could find on this is that code 55 is KS Signal. What the heck does that mean? Also, I got codes 63 and 67 from the OD/OFF light. I wasn't surprised by the transmission codes as I've been having to switch off the engine for 10 seconds after it reaches operating temperature in order to get it to shift properly into overdrive. What specifically do the 63 and 67 codes indicate? Anything I can fix without replacing the transmission. Am I making sense? Thanks
