Try putting in park and hold foot on brake, then hit the stop button. You can turn on your electrical power, like the radio, with out starting the engine, simply by hitting the start button without holding your foot on the brake. So I'm assuming, that by doing it in reverse, might solve your issue.

I'm averaging 16 mpg, High octane. I run a bit heavy in the foot though, like to have fun driving.
