  1. dcfish: What has happened with my LCD? You received my paypal 3 weeks ago. You then said I would have to send my old LCD, to have the connector removed and soldered onto the new one. You asked for my FAX number, to send me the instructions for removing the LCD. I sent it. You replied w/ an address to send my old LCD to, but did not FAX the instructions. That was 2 weeks ago, and I have not heard anything from you since, even though I've sent several e-mails and a message via forum messenger asking about the status of the FAXed instructions (and you have been on the forum since I sent the message.) What's going on? If there is some sort of issue, the very least you could do is contact me. You have my e-mail, and my FAX number. Contact me.
  2. Yes, I've been doing a bit of reading, and it seems to be a very common problem. Unfortunately it also seems that it could be any one of the three components on the throttle body, and none of them are cheap... It doesn't make sense to try and fix it by throwing parts at it. I wish I had spent some time listening to my throttle control motor, so I would know if the noise is normal or not.... or if only I had a known good one to listen to! If anyone knows whether that noise is normal or not, it would be a great help. Thanks!
  3. '99 GS300, 97K miles. For the past 2 days, after the car has been on the road for 15 minutes or so, the acceleration begins to lag. At first it becomes unresponsive to small pedal inputs, then eventually it is necessary to push the pedal to the floor to get any acceleration at all. Check engine, VSC and VSC OFF lights come on. From what I've read here and in the manual, it sounds like there's a problem with the electronic throttle control system. I have checked the resistance on the throttle position sensor, pedal position sensor and throttle control motor. All check out OK. (The throttle control motor was .1 ohm high, but it was also above the temperature specified for the test. It dropped down to the highest allowable reading, once it cooled off.) The manual also calls for operating the pedal position sensor (with the ignition on / engine off) and listening for the operation of the throttle control motor. It does operate when the PPS is moved, but there is also a continuous high pitched buzzing from the throttle control motor when the ignition is on (even when the PPS is not operated.) Is this noise normal? I've never listened closely under the hood with the ignition on and the engine off. I suspect the problem is one of the two sensors or the throttle control motor, but I don't want to start simply throwing parts at the problem! If anyone has any other insights, they would be appreciated! (The one other test I have done is turning the AC on and off at idle. The manual says the RPMs should rise from 700 to 750 with the AC on, but they actually drop a little.) Thanks in advance!
  4. An independent Lexus shop advised me that they wait until 120K to replace the timing belt on a '98-'05 GS300, say they've never had a problem in 10 years doing it at the later interval. Any opinions / experience re: doing this? It would be great to get a little extra mileage before having to change it.. but not if there's a risk of losing the belt!
  5. The LCD is seperate from the PCB board which is where the 2 backlight bulbs are soldered in. Thank you for the reply, dcfish. Of course I wish the replacement of the LCD would fix both problems.. not my luck! That brings up my next three questions: Are the backlight bulbs incandescent or LEDs? Are they readily, or special source (and if they are special source, does someone know a good source?) Once the LCD is removed, is the PC board readily accessible? Thank you again!
  6. I have two problems with the LCD display on my '99 GS300's Pioneer radio: 1) Some of the digits are garbled 2) The backlight is out on half of the display. Could someone confirm whether or not replacing the LCD display will fix both problems? Thank you!

The dealership is charging a lot for this information. I did the timing belt two weeks ago using these manuals. Was very easy. If you take the job on, let me know. I have some tips for you. This was the second time doing a timing belt. The first was on a 1996 GS300. The size of the file is 18 mb ziped. I need your email to send it. I wish this forum had a place to share these.   9. Thanks for the correct number. (Ouch on the price!) Anybody know if the gaskets can be re-used, and if so, do they usually survive intact when the TB is removed? Thanks again!
  10. Thanks.. very helpful site! Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to list the throttle body gasket.. which is weird, since it's necessary to pull the TB to change spark plugs. Should be a very commonly used gasket. Anybody have a part number for that gasket? Thanks again!
  11. Does anybody have the Lexus part number for the throttle body gasket for a '99 GS300? I want to change spark plugs but two different Lexus dealers are giving me outlandish prices for the gasket ($66.29 and $39.00!!) The Toyota dealer says it should be about $4, but says that neither of the part numbers the Lexus dealers gave (both different!) are correct for a throttle body gasket. Thanks for the help!
  12. Actually, that's not what would happen. The engine will not knock using the lower octane fuel, but the timing will !Removed!, which will decrease performance. (And I personally think the admonition to not buy a car that one can't afford to maintain to be very sound advice. If a person is on so tight a budget as to not be able to afford premium fuel, they're not likely to be able to afford the required periodic maintenance, let alone any repairs that might come up.)
