  1. Without the filter the "squirrel cage" blower vanes accumulate dust and dirt like you wouldn't believe. The factory filter may also have some anti-microbial chemical embedded tp prevent mold and mildew formation as do the inexpensive home furnace filters you can use to make new filters for your LS. thanks wwest. will do. i was just amazed at the increased force of the air after removing the dirty one. i hope it will still blow out hard after i install the new oem one. thanks for the input guys.
  2. i just removed the cabin air filter out of my 95 and i can't believe the difference it made it the velocity of air flow through the a/c. i don't think it had ever been replaced as that thing was hideous. i may just leave it out since the air blows harder now. any reasons to put new one in there, other than the occasional bug in the eye??
  3. One slightly messed up stereo install and a brain-wracking half-hour going over what I changed from before versus after the fan quit working. :) So is your fan running at low speeds (while the display says it should be high) or is the air blowing out fine but warm instead of cold? If it's the latter, then I'm not sure if it's related. But the former and it probably is. I have (well, had) the Nakamichi audio - do you? Unfortunately my stereo wiring harness was all hacked up by an unprofessional installer before I bought the car. I haven't had any problems with the audio cutting in and out other than the back left speaker - it was out as long as those two white connectors were just hanging there unconnected to anything. If I connect them together (they do plug into each other, at least in my car) then the speaker come back on but my fan is stuck on super-low speed. So what I did was leave them unplugged (which made the fan work) but then cut the yellow and black wires (they are thicker than the rest) off the harness and connect them together. That made the back left speaker work. Since you've got more than your back left speaker messing up, it might be related to your amplifier, which (again, in the Nakamichi setup) is under your passenger seat behind an a/c vent cover. The phone is tied into the a/c control so that when you're using it, the fan drops to low to keep from disturbing your conversation. I *think* the a/c compressor keeps running, so the air should still be cold, just moving really slowly. The handsfree audio comes out of the left rear speaker, and the stereo mutes the rest of the speakers. So you've got a lot of interaction between the stereo, a/c and the phone. It makes troubleshooting rather .. interesting. A service manual with wiring diagrams would probably help; I don't have one of those yet. I'll come back to this - I'm going to try to think of some more stuff to check, for both of you. I'm going to be out all weekend, though, and away from the internet (there are such places? ;-) so it'll be Monday before I can reply. -David hey, thanks so much for your patience and help. i'm going to get in there this weekend and see if i can figure it out based on what you told me. i don't have the Nakamichi stereo, but i'm pretty sure my amp is in the same place. thanks again and have a good weekend.
  4. i believe that tapping noise is the mechanism that allows the shifter to move out of park (you must have the brake pressed in order to allow this). as for the ashtray, if you are pushing firmly at the top center and still nothing, i would suggest you taking a flat-head screwdriver and popping off the wood trim, from the back, near the cupholder, working your way up until it pops right off. you may then have some more access to look at your ashtray. this is very easy to do, and there are several threads showing how. i believe you search for ashtray removal or cigarette lighter removal and you should get the link. good luck!
  5. david, i accessed the telepohone brain last night in the trunk. i unplugged the brownish plug going into the black brick-looking thing and tried the air, speaker. there was no change from what i have now. i then unplugged the two white plugs and tried again but still nothing. i did learn this: when i turn on the phone, and leave it in the cradle, my back left speaker will not play any sound. i think i may have a speaker problem back there as well. thanks for the help though.
  6. david-geez that seems to pinpoint my problem. i haven't tried it yet, as i just read your post, but get this: my rear left speaker hasn't been working and i'm not sure when it quit...like it was years ago. so i'm wondering if the air has always been like that or what. i'm going to get in my trunk this evening and check out that box. given the 1) low force of air and 2) no sound coming out of back left speaker, i'm thinking that something in that phone brain could be my problem. very helpful info..thanks so much.
  7. Install a new A/C air filter, its behind the glove box. Memphis or....? I'm in Olive Branch at the moment. oh ok, will do. i didn't think of that, thank you. i'm totally across the state from Memphis...NE corner, small city called Elizabethton. Thanks so much for the help.
  8. i have noticed two irregularities with the a/c in my 95 ls400, and after reading through the pages of a/c threads, i'm not sure if they are related or not. the car has 214,000 miles on it, and no a/c servicing had been done (that i'm aware of) until this year. i did have the a/c looked at by a local mechanic (not someone specializing in a/c) at the end of spring and he said the freon was full (i had never had a/c looked at in the 6 years i have owned the car), but he said he added oil to the compressor but that was all he could do. first, anytime i put the temp on cold, with the auto button pushed or not, the speed of the air coming out seems to be less than it should be. i get in friend's lexus' and when you hit "COLD" on the thermostat, the air gives dry eye sockets. well, in mine, it blows somewhat harder than when on a temperature, say 66 or something but it's NOTHING like the others i have been in. the air is cold, but just doesn't blow at the speed that it should. is that a problem in itsself, or is it related to this problem: when driving for any amount of time, say going on an hour or so trip, the cold air that was blowing at the start of the trip gradually becomes not so cold, and it seems that it blows out at even less force than before. so, ultimately to stay cool i have to run the thing on "cold" the entire trip to stay remotely cool. i can put my hand up to the side vent to the left of the steering wheel and you can barely feel anything. even when i close the rear A/C, it doesn't help that much with the front ones. i have read threads where people are staying cool at like 72 degrees in the summer and i'm like yea, something is wrong with my a/c. i am unsure if these problems are related or not. i don't know if this is the beginning of my compressor going out, or if there is something else that can be done, or if some type of blower fan can be replaced? looking back, i begin noticing this several years ago, but i am relatively new to the club so i thought i would post it to see if anyone could help with this, or has experienced this in a 95?? any help is greatly appreciated. thank you
  9. hey daffy, same thing has happened to me a couple of times. at first i would turn the steering wheel but when that didn't work i figured out that my cell phone charger cord was not letting the shifter get all the way into park. once i moved that, all has been well. good luck!
  10. ...not to be a smartass but...in every car i have ever had...and i have had alot, all you have to do is push the lighter in, and when it pops, its ready for use...in one car, it even shot clear into my hand! :P :) :D :D Im JK, glad you squared him away blake., how you doin anyway? haha! that did read like that, didn't it. i wish it had been that easy.
  11. steve, not to insult your intelligence, but you are holding downt the trunk button for several seconds right? i have run into a lot of people who think their trunk key is not working but they just don't know to hold it in for about 3 seconds. if you are doing this already, which i'm sure you are, then i have no idea. my key is separate from my remote (95-model) and i just changed the batteries in both masters two days ago and they are working great.
  12. I had to do the same thing to my lighter a few summers ago. Once you have the wood grain out, you need to remove the screws that hold the ashtray to the larger trim piece--there are probably 4 of them. Then, I believe there are two screws (one left, one right) that hold the ashtray and it's frame (for the lack of a better term) together. After that, you just pry the ashtray out, and cover your eyes because the two springs that make the ashtray open could come flying out--I still haven't been able to get those back in. It really makes no difference to me though because opening the ashtray manually is well worth not sweating and not having to stand on my head to replace that fuse. Once you remove the ashtray from its frame, you will see the back half of the cigarette lighter that needs to be tightened. Read this while you have ashtray in your hands, and it should make a little more sense (if not, let me know), I hope!! LOL blake-thanks so much for the help. it made perfect sense with ashtray in hand. and yes, those springs are a bear, but i think i got them back in (well at least one of them). it appears to be opening as it did, but i was too tired last night to affix the ashtray back to the woodgrain around the shifter. i'll do that tonight. that just saved me $75 from having the dealer do it. and the best news is that my air is again working. i really appreciate the help!
  13. i have read through the forum looking for specific instructions on how to remove the cigarette lighter from my 95 ls400 but i can't seem to find them. if anyone could help direct me or knows any links on showing how to do this, please let me know. i know that is what keeps blowing the fuse to the a/c and clock but i'm not sure exactly how to get to it to fix it. it appears there is a gold colored sleeve down under the lighter that is loose and causing the short. i took the woodgrain around the shifter off last night but still could not get to the lighter. i would greatly appreciate any suggestions. sweating in tennessee....
  14. got in my 95 ls this morning and the first thing i noticed was that the clock and outside temp indicators were blank and never came on. then i tried to turn on the a/c and nothing. the radio does work, but everything north of that is dead. i'm thinking and hoping this is just a fuse of some sort, but i'm not sure. any ideas before i begin looking? thank you.
  15. Good timing! I just had my 95 ls400 serviced today. The local dealer utilizes the valet service as well. Normally my invoice for the 5K service is around $75; however, today I informed the guy who picked up my car to please not rotate the tires, as I have that done where i purchased them. Just got my car back and my bill is $44.42, which includes filter, gasket, oil and check and top off all fluids. They also informed me that my lateral strut bars need replacing. I do feel a little better having a dealer look over the car, since theoretically they should know all of the ins and outs of it compared to a general mechanic who works on all types of vehicles. Anyway, I thought this would help you save some $$ next time.
  16. You have to pull the code/codes before anything can be done. I think autozone will do it for free. But any shop should be able to do it. Okay thanks for the info. I'll get it checked out. I appreciate the help.
  17. i'm new to the club and had a quick question to see if anyone has encountered this. i have a 95 ls 400 with 211,000 miles and have never had an issue with my motor until about a month ago when the check engine light came on. naturally i had it checked out immediately to find that it was only an oxygen sensor, but the mechanic said it was such a weak signal he couldn't tell which of the 4 was going bad. so i let it go, and the light has been off and on. last night while driving, i felt a flutter through the pedal like driving on a bumpy road for about 4 seconds, then my check engine light started blinking for about 3 seconds, then stayed on. it is still running fine, but the light is still on. has anyone encountered this and if so, would you have any suggestions. my initial thought was that a new problem occured, but i'm not sure. i'm getting ready to take it on a 600 mile round trip so i'm a little uneasy. thanks.
