  1. My 1991 LS400 is just about to cross 170,000. Right now the car is running alright, the front suspension is loud and clunks at times. The shifts from 1 to 2 and 2 to 3 are rough in comparison to any other lexus. I dont have any great mechanical skills, so the suspension maintance is defenitely out of my skill range. I think I can flush the transmission myself, would that fix the rough shifts?

My question is what work should be done around now? I just got new tires for winter and brakes are getting done within the next couple weeks.

Where is the best place to get the transmission fluid and how much am I going to need?

  2. I might be a little off topic here, but when I got my LS w/ nak only the front 2 speakers worked, at first I assumed the amp. A couple months after I got the car the front passenger speaker stopped working too! I'm not one for really loud music and it really didnt fade out or anything, just stopped working period. Reluctantly I took the door panel off to see what had happned, I found that the speaker was completely intact and that it appeared to be fine. Just to troubleshoot I hooked up a spare speaker, and it worked fine. Since then I have replaced all 4 midrange speakers in the car. All the nak speakers were the same way, looked fine from the outside but didnt work!

I guess my point is that before you assume its the amp take a couple minutes and check the speakers! Idk if this is your problem, I have a 91 and it may be a completely different system.

  3. I'm not exactly sure what sites you are looking for but I always use www.parts.com (then click on Nissan) That site will list several retailers that use the trademotion retail software to run their sites.

  4. I just got a response from Mikado, they are willing to send a kit to repair the LCD. Has anyone done the radio LCD repair? I was able to do the repair on my 91 clock myself. How much more difficult is it to do the radio? I would imagine there are more pins....

  5. A relative of mine has a 99 LS and the radio display has over the last few years become completely unreadable. The display is completely shot, you can only see stuff on the left side. I just replaced the LCD on my 91 LS for the clock, is there a similar repair option for the radio display? Is there any other repair for it other than the dealer replacement? The radio is the standard pioneer head unit, I have attached a picture (sorry it's a bit fuzzy).

  6. I put in a set of 4" pioneers. They arent anything too impressive but it was better than nothing. The 4" size was just a little bit too small for the space, so I used my dremel to make the mounting holes into mounting slots, then the space around the speaker I sealed off. It didnt take more than 5 minutes a speaker, really easy. As far as the best speaker for the job I would definetly go aftermarket, past that its you opinon and budget.

  7. If I remember correctly, when I had my trunk all taken apart there was a drain line that ran from the fuel area. Open the fuel door and look for a little hole near the bottom. If I remember correctly that area drains into that tube and then out a drain location just behind the rear wheel. So my guess is that the pump either over filled your car or the pump leaked a little as you filled and some gas spilled out of the system. Watch for a possible leak, but it's probably not a big deal.

  8. Do the dealers usually give around the kbb trade in values? If they do, I would be more than glad to give him an offer a bit over the book value!

I don't know about elsewhere, but in Ohio the oldest Lexus you can find on the Lexus dealers lots is about a 99. What do they do with the older models!?

  9. The guy down the street from me is thinking of getting rid of his 96 LS, Its gold with the gold pkg and tinted windows. The guy took great care of the car. It looks great! Rumor has it that he is thinking of trading it in for a new car. Obviously I'm pretty interested in the car! According to the book (kbb.com) the trade in on it is about 5,500, assuming its got 150k miles. What do you think he will actually get on it if he traded it in? The dealers always screw you on the trade-ins, so I'm clueless as to what to offer for the car. I'm hoping that he is willing to cut me a break!

  10. Alright, alright.....I guess I'll spend the $10. I hear that you can just download all of the pdf's that relate to your model. Is the site organized by model and just how many pdf's are there going to be for each model? When I buy this, I'm going to get all the stuff for several models of Toyotas/Lexus (Lots of friends with them!). So how long does it take to get the info for each model? Am I correct in that if i buy a daily subscription at noon, it will actually last 36 hours?

  11. I dont really know how to describe it, but today I had to hit the brakes pretty hard some guy just ignored a stop sign, you know the type. I hit the brakes hard enough to slow really fast but not enough to make them lock up. The brakes were nice and firm until I almost stopped then the car started to shudder, but it wasnt ABS. Could that be related in anyway? It def was from the front of the car.

  12. Ok guys i have had this crunching and groaning noise since I got the car a little over a year ago. Its a 91 LS400. I've got a little curb at the end of my drive and every day I drive over it and I hear this awful noise. I know its got something to do with the front wheels. I have read all kinds of posts that say this or that, but I'm really not sure what it is! The noise used to seem to come from just the right side, but over the last year it has started to come from both sides and its getting louder. I have also noticed that when applying the brakes moderately hard they also make a groaning noise, is this related in anyway? I'm not what you would call the best mechanic, but I'm always looking for a project!

  13. Yeah the only way to access the tank is from the trunk. You can easily remove the back carpeted part of the trunk, there are 4 screws on the top and 4 on the bottom, and then you can just pull it out. The tank is right there then.....you can't miss it!
