  1. Three different suppliers were used for the drivebelts on the 1MZ engine in the ES, RX, Camry, etc.. The noise is usually caused by the larger of the two belts, shich drives the A/C compressor and alternator. This is typically a Dayco belt causing the problem. The Lexus part number now updates to a superior belt, which is $15 to$20. Good luck.
  2. There have been problems with failed fuel pumps in the first generation LS. Two different companies supplied fuel pumps for these vehicles. I believe it was Aisin and Denso. The Denso pumps seem to last forever, while the others fail at 100K+ miles. Failure usually occurs when fuel level is below 50% and car is driven for an extended period. I suggest taking the vehicle to a dealer or Lexus specialist, as there have been ignition problems that will exactly mimic a failing fuel pump. Good luck.
  3. One thing that I have not seen mentioned in the prevous replies is in regard to certain situations that will cause this type of wear on an LS400, or any other rear-drive Lexus vehicles. These cars run a very large amount of caster, in order to provide good stability at the high speeds that they are capable of. Because suspension geometry is a compromise, this high positive caster causes the tires to sit on the edges of the tread when at high steering angles (turn your wheels all the way in either direction to see this). Therefore, if the car is driven frequently in parking lots or does a lot of u-turns, the inside or outside edges can wear rapidly. This is true even if the alignment is perfect. Michelin Energy MXV4 Plus tires are by far the best at resisting this, and are well worth the money. Good luck.
