  1. Hi guys,

Went to the Lexus dealership for CEL P01701, P1130 and P1150 and they gave a quote for $1200 to change

    1. Oxygen sensor

    2. two Air fuel ratio sensors.

I thought it is waaaay tooo much and would like to see if i can do it myself.

    Here are my questions:

    1. Where are these located in the car ? Is there a step-bystep instructions of how to do it ?

    How difficult is that job.

    2. Where to Buy. (Sewel Lexus has O2 for $139 and Air Fuel ratio sensors for $206 each) factorylexparts has Air fuel ratio for $150

    Appreciate all your help

    Thanks

lahermano- I agree with the other poster- it would be EXTREMELY unusual for all 3 of those to go bad at once- they're expensive and not like engine oil- I wouldn't change them unless they are actually BAD. How many miles on the vehicle?

How does it run? Unless it is running really bad, I would do a little more research , you might find out you spent all that money and effort for nothing. The 1st. codes that come up don't necessarily tell the story, sometimes not at all. Hate to see your pockets turned inside out by the parts fairy and still not solve the problem. Good Luck!

    Hi,

    Thanks for the response.

Well, The car has 114000 miles on it and the symptoms that i see are

    1. Very low gas mileage, it dropped ever since i started getting the CEL for couple of weeks, but the mileage dropped suddenly last week. I cleaned MAF meter

2, while driving like 40 mph is all fine, and if i start accelerating then i see some jerks, possibly a misfire or something. I am still driving that, and will check more.

all the driving is local driving about 30 miles a day.

    3. some kind of burn smell coming inside the car and also at the exhaust

At this mileage, are these sensors to be replaced as a wear and tear parts ? or can they last more than that ? what is the usual scenario here.

    Will investigate more.

    Thanks

  2. Thanks Hal,

    Please send it to sri_valere@yahoo.com

Thanks very much for the help.

Sure...Looks pretty easy. The thing that I have read, and others warn about, is that they can sometimes be a bugger to get out. The threads tend to freeze up due to the heat. Others suggest getting a lliquid spray that helps loosen/unfreese the threads before trying to take it out.

You also really need a wrench that fits the nut...it seems that it is not a standard size. If you don't have one you can get one from Advance Auto (I think it is...might be Auto Zone) through their "Loan a Tool" program.

Send me your email address and I will scan the Haynes manual procedure for the O2 Sensors and email it to you.

    Hal

  3. Hal,

BTW, Is it easier to replace the O2 sensor ? Is there a how to in the Hynes manual ?

Can you please take a look and let me know what procedure they suggest for replacing O2 sensor.

I just ordered that part and i will attempt to change that myself 2maro or day after.

    Thanks

I got out my Haynes manual and cannot find a "air fuel sensor". You might want to post a seperate thread about locating it. You will probably get a quick response.

Here is a AFS on Amazon for $163.95 and it is an original Toyota part....might save you some money if you actually need it.

    Good luck...

  4. Thanks Hal,

Air fuel ratio Sensor part number is 89467-41011, i found the oem from factorylexparts.com for $150. I want to make sure that i can do it myself before buying them.

Because, lots of these independent shops dosent seem to entertain clients giving them parts to replace.

I am having heck of a time to find an independent shot that will take my parts to replace and charge labor.

BTW, I am in Dallas area.

    Thanks for the response.

  5. Thanks Hal.

I will search for the posts.

Well i did the following before going to the Lexus dealer.

    1. Cleaned the MAF meter with the CRC cleaner from Autozone. The CEL went away and came back after 10 miles of driving.

    2. Noticed very low gas mileage. The full tank of Gas i used to get around 225 miles or so and not it dropped to 140 miles. That tells something is wrong so went to the dealer.

    3. Got Oil changed like a month ago, So i dont think that might be an issue, but surely will check the hose on the back side of air filter canister

Looking under the hood, the O2 sensor i believe is in front of the engine, seem like easy to do job myself.

But i cannot fig out where the air fuel sensors are.

Thanks for the reply and I will ask more questions while i learn more.

    laherrmano...

I had a similar problem that has been discussed under VSC/Trac Off/CEL light on. You can search it and find the original topic or maybe find it under my LOC name smyrnagc.

What I found was that the gas cap had gone bad...replaced that and it turned off the check engine light ($7 Auto Zone). I then found, through this forum, that the hose on the back side of the air filter canister had come off (You didn't just have your oil changed did you?...this happens quite frequently when you get your oil changed/air filter checked).

That was what was causing the O2 and Air Fuel Ratio sensor to show bad. I also cleaned the Mass Air FLow Sensor with MAF sensor cleaner (Advance Auto $5). This fixed my problem without the expense of the O2 sensors. You might have a legitimate problem but I would definitely check out these things before spending $1,200. You could also get it done cheaper than at the Lexus dealer.

Let me know if you need any help.

  6. Hi I am in Texas,

Could you recommend any good shops that can change the Air fuel sensors and oxygen sensors on my car ?

    Thanks

I have a'99 RX300, and although not a professional, manage to do most of my own work. Still, I've started farming out oil changes (a little more inconvenience than I want these days), although I still do my own brake pads.

In my view, any reasonably competent garage can do all of the items you mentioned, taking into account that "quick lube" type places sometimes forget to tighten oil drain plugs and filters.

Brakes could actually be trickier, as the RX300 tends to squeal, especially in front (at least for me). So all the "squeal preventer" parts should go back on to the replacement pads (in my view). I think most folks suggest factory pads versus aftermarket because of this. (I'm using Wagner Thermo-Quiet pads, and still had to reinstall the regular anti-squeal parts and the usual heavy grease to get rid of noise.)

The cabin filter is the exception. This one, depending on model year, should be easy to do with the descriptions on this forum. I got my last one at AutoZone, around $15 if I recall correctly. I'd be hard-pressed to pay a garage money to put in a "genuine Lexus" ($$) cabin filter. On my '99, it only takes 5 minutes once you find the little slide-out panel at the back of the glove box.

I hope that helps. I'm in Texas, so can't recommend anyone up your way.

I need to do a major service, which includes oil change, replacing the air cabin filter, engine filter, and a brake fluid flush. I also need to replace my brake pads. Is there an alternative to going to a Lexus dealer for all this work? I don't mind going to different places to get this done, but I'm going to be in the Baltimore area for a week, and would appreciate any feedback for this.

  7. So did u guys replaced yourselves ?

    how difficult was it ?

I am in the same boat need to replace the 2 Air fuel ratio sensors. please suggest ....

    thx

I have a 2000 RX300. The check engine light came on and the reading was a faulty air fuel ratio sensor. I had heard there were two sensors? If so, how do I find out which needs replacing? Can I go with the sensor I can purchase at AutoZone or should I buy it through the dealer?

My husband is going to replace it but because I'm home during the day I am the one doing the due diligence; and I don't know much about cars and car parts. Thanks ahead of time!!

bbell- If you go with Rockauto, the # you SHOULD need is Denso 2349009- same as original Toyota/Lexus 89467-41011. If you take a mirror (if your lucky, the # is facing up, if not, you'll need a mirror), the # is laser etched on the barrel of the sensor and isn't real easy to read but with a flashlight and good eyes you CAN see it. The front and rear sensors are the same so you can double check the # on the front sensor but the sensor you probably need is the rear. They are mounted in the exhaust mainifolds, front and rear. The one in the cat. conv. outlet is different. The code that you read with the obdII scanner will tell you whether it is front or rear. I believe you are much better off using original eq. Denso sensors- from whatever source you choose to get them. B2S1 will be front (easy one) and B1S1 will be the rear exhaust manifold. Good Luck!

  10. Thanks V Much.

I will try that. Last month or so i got CEL then i cleaned the MAF sensor with the cleaner CEL went away. It came back.

    will try again..

Some of these codes are probably 'chain reaction' codes, meaning they are getting triggered because some other component is not functioning properly, and then !Removed! up the system. P0171 is probably one of those codes, for it means 'lean bank one'. P0141 means the O2 sensor on bank 2 is slow to respond. The other codes are saying they have circuit malfunctions. All these codes refer to an air/fuel metering issue.

I would first try cleaning the MAF with automotive electrical spray cleaner and see if that helps your issue.

What would really help you is to get a code scanner. Then you can clear the codes, and as soon as the CEL trips on, you can pull the code right away. That way you can get the first code(s) that shows up, which is usually the problematic code... if you continue to drive the vehicle with the CEL on and an air/fuel issue, it almost always causes additional 'chain reaction' codes to show, and those can be misleading to the root problem.

Again, I would clean the MAF, then reset the ECU (I do it with my code reader, or you can disconnect the battery for a few moments, too). Then, when the first code pops up, scan for it. That'll point you in the right direction.

  11. Hi Experts,

I am in desperate need of help with my lexus CEL problem.

    1. GAS Mileage is very bad now

    2. Autozone looked at it and OBD-II reported Error codes {P0141, p0171, p1130 P1150}

I am sure you guys have seen this problem.

    My Questions are

    1. what diagnosis can i infer from ? O2Sensor bad and need replacement ?

    a. If replacement what brand should i choose and where to buy

    b. Do i really need to get the Lexus part ? (Lexus at Grapevine quoted $204.95 for the part)

    2. Could these be a different issue other than O2Sensor issue ?

All are the 4 error codes resulting to one problem or they are different problems that i have ?

    3. Are there any pics of how to replace it ? I looked at the engine and there is a visible O2Sensor. Is that the only one to replace ?

    4. They talk about Bank 1 Bank 2 etc. What are these and how to locate them ? and how many sensors are there that need to be looked at ?

    All responses are greatly appreciated.

Thanks very much for the help.

  12. Hi guys,

I brought my Lexus (110k miles, out of 100k warranty) to the Lexus dealer, as i found a burnt smell from the car.

They said there is a slight oil pan gasket leak and recommended changing that.

    My questions are :

    1. They quoted $400 for oil pan gasket replacement job

    2. I also have to get the timing belt replaced. Lexus quoted for $900.

Are these quotes fair or a rip ?

    3. If i get these both done, is there an overlap of labor that could be saved ? or these are two different jobs that need its own labor time.

    4. does these jobs need a Lexus skilled labor ? or they can be done with any other car mechanics ?

Any recommendations ? how i can optimize the spending amount ?

    Regards

    Newbie

  13. I have the same issue, got cel and autozone told the same

I wanted to replace myself. How and where it is located and what tools are needed ?

appreciate any guidance in performing this task.

    Thanks
