  1. I need to clean the sun visors and roof of my sc300 should I use a rug shamp or what? Does anyone know what you should you use and is there a technique for doing it with out damaging the fabric or making the liner sag ? thanks Scott
  2. Well I bought the 1998 sc300 with 48000mi. for $13,500 (earlier post).Carfax and dealer inspection showed that I need a serpintene belt and rear breaks, passaenger fog light is out of its normal place aand needs repositioning. there are some minor paint blemishes, but otherwise a clean car with all the stock bells and whistles(heated seats, traction control,12 cd changer ,mag wheels ,spoiler, moonroof). Since this was a city vehicle for at least two years and a commercial leased vehicle before that I am going to change all the fluids now. As far as the transmission I read that toyota type 4 is the way to go. As far as oil I will stay with the dino based as that is what has been used for the first 48,000.mi. and I do not wish to risk leaky gaskets down the road if I switch to synthetic. What I need to know from my fellow Lexus owners is what should I put in the sc's differential (weight and brand) I live in Pennsylvania so temp. rarely dips into single digits. how about power steering my machanic said that I should use power steering fluid but I believe Lexus recommends dextron(sp?) 2 or 3, It would seem logical to go with power steering fluid, again does brand make a diffrence? is their a specific weight or type of power steering fluid that I should use? As far as break fluid does it matter what brand goes in ? I also replaced the air filter this weekend is their an air conditioning filter?where is it located ? Are their bushings and joints that get lubed? if so would you be so kind as to tell me what they are as Lexus maintenance just refers to them in general terms ie lube bushings. Did I miss anything regarding fluids ,filters, lub. or other stuff that should be changed now rather then at 60,000 mi thank you Scott
  3. I was wondering just how complete the Lexus $95.00 "safety inspection" is and should it be counted to uncover problems in the engine, transmission and other costly to repair parts of the car? What other tests,or areas need to be checks so that a buyer has a good chance of knowing before purchase the problems with the vehicle. I would appreciate your thoughts on this important topic. Thanks Scott
  4. hi I own a 1993 gs300 and have 136000mi only issues slow(maybe 1/4qt. every 3000mi) oil leak rear main gasket. Also they are crap in the snow. otherwise outstanding value.way better then camry
  5. JD thanks auctions trade cars to places as far away as texas to NY i wonder how the dealers know what they are buying do they go to texas to bid carsi wonder Thanksagain Scott
  6. Tom, Thanks for taking the time to respond. I have the concern I assume that the dealer examination would turn up any problem. Since I own the 1st gen gs300 its the same engine in the sc300 so my test drive will give me a frame of refrence as to engine performance. responces like yours are helpful as the land of the SC is new to me and I need to here from experenced folks like you thanks again Scott
  7. Fellow Lexus owners, I own a 1st gen. gs300 and want to replace my stinkin Mercedes with another Lexus. I located a 1998 sc300 with 48,000 miles and if it passes carfax and Lexus dealer evaluation ($90.00 mech.review ). I would like to purchase it if the price is a very good deal. It appears it might be from on line reviews in NADA, Kelly Blue book, edmunds. The sc3000 in question is green, has traction control, spoiler, upgraded wheels, moonroof, Nak.cd,heated leather seats, and is reported to be in VG condition. I am going to NYC this coming week to pick it up for Lexus dealer inspection. I would be the third owner the first was in Texas and the second is in NY City where the car was bought from a non Lexus dealer. That fact is a concern why was a Texas Lexus shipped to non Lexus dealer in NY City for resale is that a common practice? The second owner said she bought it a year and a half ago for $19,000 with 40,000 miles on it. Are better deals then this common ? or should I take the plunge now. I value your input. My plan if purchase is to change all fluids belts and have it tuned up. Thanks for your valuable feedback it is much appreciated Scott
