  1. Greetings to all! Completed replacing my '97 LS400 Rack & Pinion Steering unit this weekend. Though a labor intensive task, no problems encountered. Took approx. 6 hrs. One of the first items of work was to disconnect the tie-rod ends. This was the only bummer of the job. Using a rented 'pitch' fork-type tool to pop off the TRend, it totally ruins the rubber part of the TRend. I knew immediately both TRends would have to be replaced. Also discovered that after dropping the TRends, you can lift the entire rotor/wheel assembly to check for Ball Joint play. Sure enough, the bottom BJoints need to be replaced. My question is, does anyone have the tightening torque specifications for both the TRend Nut & BJoint Nut when connecting back? I've got a torque wrench but not sure how tight these should be. Fyi, got the remanufactured R&P here in Houston $175. Got 2 lower Ball Joints & outer TRends from IronToad.com $233.68. Any replies appreciated. :whistles:
  2. Greetings! The very same thing happen to me just a month ago and I had all the same symptoms. The problem & solution is a fuse. Except this set of fuses are under the dashboard behind the hood release handle. I know there's fuses & relay switches under the hood next to the battery, but it's the set under the dash that you'll have to open up, identify the fuse & replace. Good luck!
  3. Your power steering problems will never end unless these filters in the system are cleaned and kept clean: http://www.saber.net/~monarch/pscreen.JPG http://www.saber.net/~monarch/psclean.jpg For profit motivated reasons, many shops and mechanics would rather sell you a new power steering pump or steering rack instead of simply cleaning these filters out with brake cleaner. Search this forum using "power steering filter" and "solenoid filter" as your search words to get more detailed information. ← To MONARCH, how does one clean the filter inside the PS pump or is this even doable?
  4. Not sure if you've completed this task, but I too, sometime ago, had to replace the mirror within the driver side door. Believe it or not, it simply clips on. there's 2 on top of the mirror and 2 on the bottom (on the back side). You firmly hold the mirror then pry forward, either top first or bottom first but not both at the same time. Obviously afterwards, you'll need to disconnect the wiring harness.
  5. Thanks for the tips! I wasn't planning on doing anymore than the R&P, but you're right, since I'm down that far, might as well do the other items as well. Here's the place that rebuilds R&Ps. Mine cost 175. +tax + 100.core deposit. ADCO Power Steering Products, Inc. 3541 Pinemont Houston, TX 77018 713-681-1446 ← Sorry but no website although I found them on eBay afterwhich I sent them an email & they called me.

  7. Greetings to all with LS400s. After discovering I have a serious rack & pinion steering leak, I picked up a rebuilt R&P at a local shop here in Houston and am now ready to replace it myself. I want to ask if there's anyone out there who's already been thru this adventurous task. I've been reading all I can get my eyes on to prep for this job and though I'm feeling confident that this shouldn't be that difficult, I just thought you might want to share some helpful tips & hints. I consider myself a pretty good auto mechanic as I have spent many years under the hood and have all the necessary tools! Thanks to all who reply & Happy 2005 to y'all.
