  1. yeah, you and he have it right. when you feel vibrations in the steering wheel during braking, then it is going to be warped rotors 95% of the time.

Like mentioned above, either they warped quickly this time because they are getting thin or you may be using the brakes pretty heavily. Sometimes, the type of pad will make a difference as well. (certainly not if you had bought stock stuff.....)

Depending upon their age, thickness, and warpage, they may or MAY NOT be able to be 'turned' again, which means they grind them down to perfectly flat again.

If it were me, and I was going to keep the car awhile,......I'd get new rotors and bypass the surfacing a 2nd time.

  2. just curious, have you checked to see what they do on the 60k?

I just got a 99 gs400, it has 80k miles, and my printout of the service history only mentions:

    engine oil and filter

    air filter

    coolant

    air conditioner filter

    brake fluid

    transmission fluid

    differential fluid

    check battery

rotate tires / check air pressure

    inspect spare tire

inspect brake discs, lines, hoses, etc.

    adjust parking brake

Thats it! Any decent lube shop that uses quality fluids can do all of that! And probably for something more like $200 instead of $900. ;)

I'd second the opinion above of checking with a Toyota shop. Someone has mentioned here before that they tend to be cheaper, if the shop owner will even do a Lexus.

Oh, incidentally, my car did end up having the "V belt" replaced at around 68k. Not sure if it broke or what. From what I can tell, they do NOT mean the timing belt, probably more like the accessory drive belt. (serpentine belt)

  3. hey Stanbo, I wasn't trying to sell him on the Drag Radial, I think we all know they are for DRAG RACING only and not great for street driving. Everything you mentioned is perfectly true about them.

I was only letting him know that the COMPANY has the ability to make good tires (like the 555) and that he should check out their offerings, assuming he had not heard of them before, nor had experience with their tires.

  4. ***DUDE!!!***

The car I'm buying was SOOOO just AT Tustin Lexus last week!!!!! I'm straight trippin!

I'm in freakin' Ohio, and the car is at "DC MOTORS" in Anaheim Hills. I had it sent to Tustin to get that 342.5 point inspection done. :)

Anyway, it's back at DC MOTORS now and I'm trying to hook up a carrier company to trailer it back here.

Any chance I could get you to check it out for me,.......a bit of a visual inspection??? :) I'll send ya flowers. :)

  5. poor cfincke, getting raped and ya don't even know it. :(

dude, it sure sounds like they're straight ripping you off!!! I'm feelin' your pain way over here!

$1200 for oxygen sensor replacement?!?! for the love of all that is holy, they are straight rippin' you off.

$1600 for a clogged catalytic?? hard to diagnose sometimes, sure, ...but they're just strappin' it to you man.

I humbly suggest that you find a different place to take your business.

  6. obviously hard to tell from here, but, there's a slim chance that since you said it is changing as you accelerate, that maaaaaybe you have a spark leaking through a sparkplug wire, or a coil, or something like that.

I would suggest raising the hood of the car, and finding the throttle cable / bracket.

You want to be able to rev the engine with your hand there under the hood.

Once you've found that, you can wait until it is dark out, completely dark, fire up the engine and look for the spark around the plug wires, coils, distributer, etc. If that was it, it would be relatively easy to see.

It wouldn't hurt to rev it up a bit to get stronger spark, and thus something easier to see, then, to also move the sparkplug and/or coil wires around to see if that changes anything as you're revving it up just a little bit. (no need to rev high, just 2000 or so)

Wouldn't hurt to pop the hood anyway to tell if the noise is external to the engine or internal.

  7. I know that the Nitto Drag Radial is good, and I've heard that their performance line of tires is good, but I don't know anything about their normal street tire for passenger cars.

It's a good company, and they can make a good tire, so I would *think* that whatever line of normal, passenger car tires they have, must be decent as well.

again, just don't cheap out and get a $50 tire. :)

  8. another thought is to hit up a website, or magazine that is for Audio freaks, you know the type I'm talking about. They'll recite head units, subwoofers, cross-overs, etc, the way a computer geek talks about video cards or Ghz,..or the way a network guy will talk about his Spanning Tree loop. ;)

I know I've seen these magazines in the stands at the book store right next to Hot Rod, Popular Mechanics, Car Craft, Sportbike Rider, etc.

that would get you in touch with guys who make AUDIO their hobby, juno watt ah mean, es'ay?

  9. I really can't dude, I'm sorry.

I know some friends really like the Toyo Proxes performance tires, but I don't know that they are quiet.

Hard to go wrong with some quality Pirelli's.

If you want smooth and quiet though, I would personally guide you towards Michilin. That's just me. ;)

Either way, good tires cost significant money. All brands sell cheap tires and ya get what ya pay for, ya know?

Sorry I don't have any better personal experience for ya there........

  10. bummer dude, Deadends everywhere.

If I were in your shoes, I'd be shooting some emails or making a few calls directly to Levinson, or to Alpine, Kenwood, Pioneer, blah, blah, blah.

btw, this Mark Levinson guy,........ :),........ doesn't Lexus also call some of the TRIM updates of the same name??

I mean, Levinson isn't the ACTUAL company *making* the stereo are they? (like Nakamichi, JBL, Bose, Alpine, etc.)

If they don't, then it would help for you to find out who *really* makes that changer and head unit! Any stickers to look at on the units??

  11. There is a Modifications forum here on the board at:

    http://us.lexusownersclub.com/forums/index....php?act=SF&f=8

other than that, you can find chips and air intake tubes/filters at www.lextasy.com

Swift Racing, Injen, K&N and others are making the air intake tube and filters.

Swift is the only one that *I* know of that make a chip too, but hey, I'm a newbie too.

btw,...... "cheap" and "big impact" are like antonyms man. :) LIke an oxymoron or something. They just don't go together. Like peanut butter and pickles.
