  1. you mean freon? How would that fix the heat? ← I also ran the diagnostic and it came back with a 00.
  2. you mean freon? How would that fix the heat?
  3. I agree the rears feel softer than the fronts. I have GT's in the front. Maybe after christmas I'll get AVS's in the front as well. But I am definitely happy with them so far.
  4. Ok so when I bought the car, the AC barely cooled. It would cool in the morning but after sitting in the Texas sun all day, it would not cool at all on the evening drive. I was told I would have to replace the evaporator. I didn't since winter was just around the corner. So today it was in the 50's in the morning and the heat won't work either?! The fan works fine...what could it be?
  5. I had the exact same problem last week. But with me, when the car finally died it would not turn over even. And the electrical stuff didn't work. I had to replace the alternator ($400) and now its fine.
  6. Nice...I have to try that. I know its on but I never attempted a call. You're in Houston too? Do you know any other SC owners in Houston? We should get a mini meet together sometime
  7. I have a car phone in my arm rest. Does anyone else have it, and if so, have you activated it? Its old so I am guessing an analog signal with Verizon would work.
  8. I went in for a tranmission flush and fill and my mechanic advised me against it. He said the fluid had been in there so long that it had residue in it. He felt that if we put new fluid in there, it might break the transmission. So he just took the fluid out, took out the residue and put it back in. What do u guys say? How much would a used transmission cost?
  9. I just got two new Yokohama AVS ES100's 245/45/16's for the rear. Set me back by $250 so I was going to wait before changing out the front Goodyear 225/55/16 Eagle's. It does kinda feel funny coz the rear ones are wider but not funny enough to warrant another couple hundred. The front ones still have a lot of tread on them. I am hoping I'll be fine.
  10. awesome! I researched the site and found similar threads. The local Toyota dealership carries Type T-IV and its $3 bucks a quart. When I put it into D, the car shudders...also feel the transmission slipping a bit when slowing down. Would flushing the system help or is drain and fill fine? I have 135K on the car and no prior service history. Thanks
  11. I wanted to change the transmission fluid but no one seems to have the T Type 2 fluid marked on the stick. They say Dexon 3 would be fine. Is that true? The manual says T type 2 as well but I can't find it.
  12. Thanks a lot for the replies guys. Fortunately since I had this post, I have not had this problem. The car was sitting in direct Houston, TX sunlight where temp inside the vehicle is over 100F. Not checked the other stuff. I do rev the engine once every time I start it and it has never happened again.
  13. I go to BMW meets with my X5 but since I recently got a 1992 SC400 I was checking in to see if there are owners on this board from Houston. It would be great to connect and check out our cars, network etc
  14. This has happened 3 times in the last 3 days. I start the car and then 5 secs later it dies. Then I start it up again and rev it a bit and its fine...Indicator of future trouble? Any clues?
  15. I think the Nakamichi IS the premium sound system. Thats the upgrade. The other one is Pioneer.
  16. thanks for the info guys. The local mechanic here had said change timing belt every 60 so I am glad I posted the question.
  17. I was wondering if the SC400 needs synthetic oil or just regular 10w30? Also is there a difference in getting the filters from Toyota or jiffy lube or walmart or should I get them from Lexus? What is the best type of tire for the car thats good in heavy rains, the rear ones are almost done. When does the timing belt need to be changed? 60 or 90K? Mine's got 131K miles so wondering if I should get it checked out.
  18. Thanks for the advice 2XlexV8. I was doing some reading on the R134a. It seems like it doesn't cool as much (which I don't care much about) but it also seems to blow the condensor which is a higher cost repair. When you say receiver, is that the same as a condensor?
  19. I picked mine up yesterday. 1992 SC400 with 131K miles. They put freon in the AC so its blowing cold now, not sure how long it'll last...maybe next week or maybe few months. The drive home was awesome, I actually had fun picking out a car in the distance and seeing how fast I could catch up...it was incredible. Bonuses: 1. Didn't know it had premium sound system. 2. Didn't know it had a 12 CD changer in the trunk. I thought it probably would be a 6. 3. It had a phone built in in the center arm rest. It actually is on but ofcourse couldn't place any calls. 4. Its internally wired with a microphone on the driver side visor for cell phones. Now for the fixes: 1. My front seat is torn on the sides...so I am in the same boat as you. Need some leather work on it. 2. The plastic AC vent in the center is cracked, no biggie but it would be nice to replace it. 3. Need new carpets for the floor, they are yellowing...maybe shampooing would help. 4. Fix the AC Like Cbordeaux said, estimates would help. Cheers!
  20. Alright so I got it yesterday and drove home 50 miles away. It was a completely exhilirating experience!! I also found out that it has a Premium sound system and a 12 disc changer. I opened the center arm rest, and there was a cell phone for the car! I think I might actually keep this car for a while. I need new tires for it, what size are the stock wheels? 15's?
  21. How do you know you have a premium system? I am getting an SC400 tomorrow but not sure if I have the regular or premium system.
  22. is there like a conversion kit for the AC? to go from the old freon based system to a more modern one?
  23. I have a Red 92 SC400 with 131K miles. I could probably let you have it for lower than what ur getting. The AC does not blow cold air. As far as I know that's the only issue with the car. I had the Toyota dealer run a diagnostic to check the car out and they came back with $1000 to fix it. I think you can get it fixed for cheaper than that. They suspect the evaporator which they quoted at $365. Let me know
  24. Ok so the issue they said is the evaporator. Their cost is $645 to fix it at the Toyota Dealership. Is it worth it or can I get it fixed for cheaper? I pulled up some evaporator costs on the net and they range from 250 to 450 without labor.
  25. The exterior is in excellent shape. I had my friend who owns a 1999 SC400 test drive it and he said the car drove really well. He did notice stains around and on the carpet and we figured that it had water damage. I took it into Toyota for a diagnostic and I'll know tomorrow if anything else is broken. The service technician did say that SC400's are very solid cars. I checked carfax and it seems like the car had two owners. The interior was pretty dirty(I saw the car the day it got traded in) and the drivers side seat's leather is really worn out and torn in places. But I think a good shampoo and detail on the car will make it look like new.
