Donna Frank Posted July 6, 2022 Posted July 6, 2022 I own an RX450h which had been a dealer demo. It had 18k miles when I purchased it from a Lexus dealer as certified. Always had routine maintenance. Noticed a leak of red fluid on garage floor which turned out to be antifreeze. Car ran fine and only observed leak once. When mechanic checked it out, I was informed 2 head gaskets blew. Car had 57K miles but was out of warranty in age but not in miles. Repair estimate$ 5,000+ (mostly labor). Contacted Lexus Customer Service & after 48 hours received a call back stating Lexus Corp would pay for parts only - which amount to $834. Interestingly Lexus does not want to learn why this may have happened. Perhaps it's a defective part or engine? Head gaskets typically blow on cars with 200K miles if at all. I will never consider buying another Lexus. These are supposed to be reliable luxury vehicles. It's apparent Lexus Corp does not stand behind their product. I expect more from a $50,000 vehicle in the Toyota family. Disappointed does not begin to describe what I'm feeling. I no longer feel safe driving this car

RX400h Posted July 28, 2022 Posted July 28, 2022 According to Consumer Reports, issues related to the 2013 RX 350 and 450h are very rare. In fact, years 2013 through 2017 are rated much better than average for reliability. Sometimes dealer demos are driven very aggressively by test-drivers, before ant break-in period had expired. You are correct in that head gaskets do not typically fail before 200,000 miles. Having two gaskets blow is probably not common, although when one leaks the other should be replaced. Another possibility is that the heads are defective in one way or another. The repair shop wouldn't likely know whether this is true until they remove the heads. Our RX400h has over 134,000 miles on it and the only gaskets that have needed to be replaced were the valve cover gaskets at approximately 120,000 miles. You may want to get an estimate from a trusted independent shop and even a Toyota dealership. I think something is "not right".
