96 Es300 Remote Options?

Hi, I am new to this forum. I have a 2003 ES300 with navigation. My friend has a 1996 ES300, he bought his car from a salvage yard, and repaired it, but his lock/unlock button on the key does not work. I have tried searching, but im probobly not doing it right, because it finds nothing. I was wondering if a remote from a 1997, an actual remote with the buttons, could be programed to work with the 96.
