Hadyourphil Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 Mine doesn't seem to work any more. The indicator light is on, which I assume means the auto-dim function is on. How can I test it? Is it a bear to replace? What should one cost? I don't drive that much at night so I have no idea how long this might have been broken. I have 202,000 miles on my '01.
sheffield_rogue_jr Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 Hi Hadyourphil, I realize that this post is from 2012, but I wanted to contribute in case you were still searching for an answer. :whistles: Though I admit I have no knowledge as to how much it costs to repair/replace the system, the following is how I tested the auto dim function in my 01 Rx300's mirrors. You need a flashlight (LED preferred, but an incandescent one should also work for this). 1. Seat yourself comfortably in the driver's seat ^_^ . Turn the key to Start or Run. 2. Verify that the mirror's indicator is on, and with your left hand, reach around from under the center mirror with your left hand and completely cover the day/night sensor on the back of the mirror with a fingertip. It is a deep indentation in the back on one side (don't remember which), which is obvious when you are looking at the mirror from outside, at the front bumper. (note: you can skip this step if it's already night outside, but if the mirrors are working correctly, the difference might be hard to tell ) 3. While the day/night sensor is covered, switch your flashlight on with the other hand and touch (and hold) the light to the light sensor on the front of the mirror, at the top (little circle with a light-sensing chip visible). 4. If the system is working, all three mirrors should darken within 10-15 seconds. (In case you need an explanation: you are stimulating that it is dark outside and somebody is following you with his high-beams on :P )
