Damaged Calipers On Front Brake Job

I was told that having a damaged caliper is rare in a vehicle with 60K miles, although this has happened to me for the second time with Lexus doing brakes on two different GX470.

Is this a technician error, or just bad luck?

By the way, the new caliper was a few dollars south of $500!

What was the nature of the "damage"? Did you get the old caliper back? ... I've seen some "fancy dancing" at car dealerships over the years when I've demanded to see a part that has been replaced.
