irish87
I have searched the forums, but haven't found this specific issue. The car has been in the family since new. I've had it for the past 3 1/2 years. Never had an upgrade or issue with the nav system. When I start the car, the nav map accurately appears for about 3-5 seconds and then switches to the following error message: Unable to read data. Check if map DVD is correct. I have pulled out the nav unit from the trunk, checked the connections, and cleaned the disc. Still with the same results. I loathe the idea about taking this to the dealer as they always want to fix something other than what I came in with at ridiculous costs. I am hoping someone here can point me in a reasonable solution (the glue gun around the torn sub-woffer saved me from buying a $600 dealer part plus installation and cost me $1.50 :) ). Thank you! curiousB
Some others have had similar symptoms when they tried upgrading to a knock off map DVD. Search the forum to learn more. Are you still running the factopry assigned map DVD?

Are you still running the factopry assigned map DVD? CuriousB, Yes, it is the factory installed map DVD. It is very strange. When I start the car, it works okay for about 5 seconds. The map is there. It tracks my first movements, then stops. Any insight?

I am finally breaking down and bringing it into the dealer on Wednesday morning. I'm hoping it is just a loose wire. I guess I'll never know, but it will cost me a few hundred minimum I bet. irish87
Okay, the dealer wasn't as bad as potentially could have been, but it is Lexus...it still wasn't cheap. After about 30 minutes in the shop, they told me I needed a new Navigation ECU. They could put one in, with the new 2010 disc map, for $1900+ tax. Since they wanted $1500 for the ECU, I thought I might try to find one on my own. I posted a message on a parts board and got a call from someone offering me a Gen 4 ECU (my 2002 has Gen 2/3) and the new 2010 disc for $750. Does anyone know if that switch would work? He tells me the unit is the same size and uses the same bracket and plug. It also has the override option to work on the destination while still driving. It sounds like Gen 4 is so much better than 2/3 and the idea has me thinking. Is there any corroboration out there? Would I have to do anything else to make the switch?
