Engine Build Date

Is there anyway to find the build date on a 1mze engine from the serial number on the engine...???? Doing a backdoor investigation concerning my neighbors highlander engine sludge failure on a 2003 highlander. Maybe the engine is a 2002 or earlier and can fall under the warranty period.
