lugesm Posted February 20, 2008 Share Posted February 20, 2008 Bit the bullet and allowed the local Lexus dealer to take $370 from my credit card for an upgrade (the latest, he says) to my GPS. Very disappointing. Even after the upgrade, the database is more limited than my two year old Garmin 330 portable. The Garmin is able to provide turn-by-turn directions in my neighborhood (streets are nearly 20 years old) whereas the Lexus GPS shows only the streets and announces that it is UNABLE to provide turn-by-turn directions. Just returned from a trip to Georgia in which I encountered the same issue. Old, established neighborhood streets are plotted on the screen, but the GPS cannot provide turn-by-turn directions. The old (almost obsolete) portable Garmin 330 had no trouble. It goes without saying that I don't need turn-by-turn directions in my neighborhood ! :-) BUT, I suspect this will be true of many, many neighborhoods throughout the US. For what I paid for the Lexus LX-470 upgrade I could have bought a NEW Garmin 750 that has a much superior database. VERY DISAPPOINTING. That's the last time I will do that ! ! ! I remember checking a Lexus link a few years ago that gave a state by state list of what was updated in their databases. My area had no changes so I skipped the update disk. Bought a Garmin Nuvi recently and it smokes my Lexus GPS. I suppose this is to be expected. Built-in systems can never keep up with external, portable systems. In fact, my Lexus LX-470 uses a DVD. Obsolete technology. All of the portable devices use flash memory that is faster, more reliable, and less expensive. The thing that burns me is that Lexus happily charges $370 for the DVD, being more aware of the above facts than most owners could possible be. Sad, and reprehensible business practice.
