MHH Posted December 5, 2007 Posted December 5, 2007 I'm considering the GS300 for my next car. Specifically a used 1998-2002...I've owned several Honda's and Acura's over the years that have been great. I like the GS300 for a more sport-luxury type vehicle to be used on long road trips, not necessarily a daily driver. Are there any known problems and what should I look for when buying a used GS300? Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks.
SRK Posted December 5, 2007 Posted December 5, 2007 They are great cars all round. I would advise test driving a GS400 - the extra power is amazing, and doesn't come at the expense of fuel economy. If you can find one with the factory optional 17 inch wheels, that's better - handling is improved, ride quality remains excellent. In Canada the headlights are prone to getting water condensation in them. As for specific mechanical problems, there aren't any really. Starters go out like the LS - same starter. If it clicks a few times before engaging, it's a relatively pricey job to repair. Otherwise, typical Lexus - near perfect.

If the car is lowered you need to be carefull of the balljoints. Other than that I aggree I would only look for a GS400. BP
MHH Posted December 5, 2007 Author Posted December 5, 2007 Thanks for the replies. I've been using the search function here and reading some threads, very good information on this site. Edmunds also has good consumer reviews as well. Thanks again.
mgroce Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 Be aware of the brake booster failure. I had a 99 300 with 63000 miles. It just went out and from the forum it looks like it was going to be over $1500 to repair. Traded her in, they gave me $8000.
raymsixsix Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 Hey MHH, I had a 2001 GS300 and bought it with 42k miles and it was totalled at 90k miles. In that period, I replaced an 02 sensor and two door lock actuators went out and that was it. If you can find a 400 I'm sure you'll enjoy the extra power
