Middleastin Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 Hello to all i am new here to this forum and kind of new to Lexus, I am a big Mercedes guy but Lexus was always know to me as an Amazing car they sure are top class cars and was even more in favor for Lexus as soon i had one. Anyway I have just purchase 1993 ES300 with 145,000 on the clock, i got a great Price on it too this Lexus runs and drives Amazing . But with used cars theirs alway problems that you have to deal with and here are my problems. My first Problem is that I cannot find the hole in my exhaust I have look everywhere I know for a fact that it is in front of the car by the motor it maybe my manifold or my header it makes a loud BRRROOOMMM noise and when i rev a little high it sounds like a tuned sports car, When i drive fast the noise all goes away and you can actual hear the motor humming. based on what i said does anyone out their no what it maybe. Second is that the car tends to overheat when idling but when I start driving the car starts to cool down and runs on regular temperature. But after a drive or while idling i smell coolant but i do not know where the smell is coming from and i have no clue what it could be. But at some points it would just go crazy the temperature goes up and down as it pleases until i open up the radiator cap and let all the pressure release it goes back to it usually ways. My third thing is that my check engine light is on I am just saying it may help to determine the problems that i have stated above. Just in advanced THANKS to all who is planning to help me out here thank you.
gbhrps Posted August 29, 2007 Posted August 29, 2007 Middleastin, From what you describe and how you describe it, it is obvious that you know little about auto mechanics. That said, it is best for you to take your car to a qualified mechanic who knows Toyota/Lexus automobiles. The first thing to have the Tech person look at is the Check Engine code. It may show just what system part is causing your overheating problem. And it may not. Regardless, driving a car that has an overheating problem is a sure way to destroy the engine and strand you with a very expensive repair bill. The tech should also be able to spot your exhaust leak quickly with it up on a hoist. I could give you a list of things that could all cause the symptoms you describe, but that would only scare you to death, and it may well be none of them. Your best bet is to get the car to someone who knows his stuff, sooner rather than later. Spend a few bucks to get an accurate answer and then figure out your options and go from there. Good Luck!
ACTIONJACKSON Posted August 30, 2007 Posted August 30, 2007 Hey, The brooomm noise could be alot of things, it could even be a loose clamp making one of the pipe touching something it shouldnt. Best thing is to have a a mecanic inspec underneath the car. like I said could be a lot of things such as the downpipe, resonator or even some crap that got in your muffler. Overheating when idling but cools down when driving: maybe the fans is not doing the job? because when you drive you dont really need the fan running. You can always have the coolant pressure checked. Coolant smell, as you may already know when it starts smelling it could be a head gasket issue. do you have smoke comming out of the muffler? Hows the heating? does it work well? But im not saying that if theres smoke coming out that it is the head gasket but it usually does that. Check engine light: obviously you should have it checked & see what error codes you get, but maybe one of your O2 sensor is fawked. If you are carefull with money best thing to do is to bring it to a local garage have it inspected. Get his input & decide from there if you should go to the dealer! Im not an expert but Hope it helps a bit.
