  1. Replacing the timing belt/water pump is probably going to cost significantly more than just the valve cover gaskets alone. If you don't travel out of town much, and wouldn't mind being stranded if the belt broke, it is o.k. to wait for that to happen. Your ES has a non-interference engine. Absolutley change the transmission fluid. Some people say when it gets to that age "the old fluid is holding it together". That is a myth that I wish would die. Instead of doing a transmission flush, you could do several drain and refills over the course of 5-6000 miles. It is easy to do yourself and is much cheaper than taking the car to a mechanic to do a flush. Make sure you use Toyota-branded transmission fluid. Hey thanks for the response buddy! Very informative.
  2. Hi Guys, I have an ES300 1995 purchased a few month ago, Loving it. I have to change my valve cover gasket, i did some research in this forum & noticed it is a common thing. My question is; i would be going to my local garage to fix this. (general mechanics) The timing belt has never been changed i would like to do it at the same time, but would a local mechanics be able to change the timing belt without a problem or it is a bit more touchy?? Also, should I flush out the tranny oil with new, some ppl tell me if the level is good dont change it since it is an old car. Thanks,
  3. I think its your alternator based on the problem your having. I know you just changed your battery but check the battery terminal, rust dosent help. The "not starting" part could be your starter or the ignition barrel or switch
  4. Hey, The brooomm noise could be alot of things, it could even be a loose clamp making one of the pipe touching something it shouldnt. Best thing is to have a a mecanic inspec underneath the car. like I said could be a lot of things such as the downpipe, resonator or even some crap that got in your muffler. Overheating when idling but cools down when driving: maybe the fans is not doing the job? because when you drive you dont really need the fan running. You can always have the coolant pressure checked. Coolant smell, as you may already know when it starts smelling it could be a head gasket issue. do you have smoke comming out of the muffler? Hows the heating? does it work well? But im not saying that if theres smoke coming out that it is the head gasket but it usually does that. Check engine light: obviously you should have it checked & see what error codes you get, but maybe one of your O2 sensor is fawked. If you are carefull with money best thing to do is to bring it to a local garage have it inspected. Get his input & decide from there if you should go to the dealer! Im not an expert but Hope it helps a bit.
  5. the gas pump, maybe its fawked.(does it smell gaz)? Maybe your coilpack might want to check that out. if theres is a little crack humidity will slip
