Engine Temp. Guage Not Working.

My Engine Temp. Guage that is on the left side of my Dash is not working at all. My Car also has no power when I first start it Cold so I was thinking it must be running rich because it thinks the Temp. is so low. Is this a Coolant Temp. Switch problem or should I look for something else.

most likely coolant temperature sensor itself.

is the CEL lit up?

Yeah the CEl is lit up but the procedure to check the codes (meaning the paperclip in the diagnostic port) doesn't work for me. I did hook it up to a scanner recently and I got a code for o2 sensor 1 bank 1. I am about to replace all o2 and a/f sensors but I wanted to know if the Coolant Temp. Switch is the reason my temp guage doesn't rise pass Cold on my Instrument panel.
