pocketmuffler
hey im new to all of this lexus stuff. i just switched cars with my mom who had a 92 sc400. when it gets to about 1200 rpm i hear a grinding/rattling noise, almost as if the fan was hitting its shroud or something. anyone have any advice on what this may be? BMAN1113
Sounds kind of like when one of my decorative exhaust tips on my '93 Sc400 became loose. At a certain RPM the pipe would vibrate just right causing it to make a loud sound, similar to your description (more rattling than grinding). Sounded horrible. Just put the car in park (with emergency brake on), have someone hold on to both tips (when cold!!) and accellerate. See if that takes care of it. I thought I had a catalytic going out or something. It was deceptive because it didnt sound like it was coming from the rear. I guess being connected to a long exhaust pipe tends to throw the sound and make its source hard to detect. My mechanic just secured it with a sheetmetal screw and problem fixed. $0.
jbarhorst2
Your exhaust pipe also has several heat shields along its length. It could be one of those. That's what it was on my car. I secured mine with a radiator hose clamp. You can get under the car and lightly "bang" the exhaust pipe with the side of your fist. You should be able to trace down the rattle.
