I just replaced my compressor. I got one online for $150. There are also a few on ebay that were remanufactured. They were about 250-350. It was real easy to do. Then I got a refrigerant recharge kit from the local auto parts store for $40 and charged it up along with the lubricant. Works like a charm now. You might want to take it to a a/c guy first to see if the system is leaking. They can do a compression/leakdown test to see. I tried to do the home test with the red dye but since there are so many hoses and components to the system, I wasn't sure if there was a leak or not. I just took a shot at filling it with $15 worth of refrigerant and it worked great.
