98gsrider
Just wanted to say hi, i'm new to the forum. i also have a question. I have a 98 gs 300 with about 90000 miles on it and i am noticing some burning oil and my check engine light is on. i was just curious if anybody could give me any ideas. Thank you, Jerry
SRK
The purpose of the check engine light is to indicate that the computer has stored a trouble code. It is not a matter of guesswork at this point, or ideas, it is a matter of having the code read to determine the fault. Have the code read by a company (dealer or independant) and you will be on your way to fixing the engine.
Lexusfreak
I agree with SRK. What is the service & maintenance history on your GS rider? How much oil are you burning (let's say between oil changes) & what kind of oil are you currently using? B)

B) ← Thanks for the info, i am using 5-30wt oil mobil one(syn) and i change every 3000 miles. i bought the car with 54000 miles on it. i would say it is probably using half a quart between changes. If you're using dino oil it wears out after about 3000miles. The real key is looking at the color with synthetic, change it once it's dark. <_<

Thanks you, Jerry ← If you check your owners manual it will most likely say that is a normal amount of oil consumption (even though it's synthetic). I don't think it's serious. Is your gas mileage pretty good? I might suggest to try Amsoil ASL 5W 30 synthetic oil, along with the Amsoil HD oil filter for an oil change or 2 ( just as an experement kind of thing......you will have no problems getting 6,000 miles between changes) & see if there is any difference in your oil consumption.......my guess is you will not need to 'top up' anywhere near a half qt. Here is some more info: http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/asl.aspx Here is a comparo between Mobil 1 & Amsoil. ;) http://www.amsoil.com/performancetests/amsoil_vs_mobil1.aspx
