damon
Thinking about buying a 96 LS400. 75k miles, both airbags deployed. Owner smacked a pole with front bumper (will need to replace bumper and headlight assy) but no other damage. Car runs great, except vibrates (probably broken tranny mount). He's asking $8k. Should I buy it?

95LS400Bob
Seems I heard it was real expensive to get those air bags back operational. Better find out.
VGR
On a conventional car the cost to replace an air bag is about $2,000 EACH. On a Lexus I would imagine the cost would be near $3,000 each !! Body shops say alot of fairly new cars with relatively minor collision damage are getting totalled nowadays due to the cost of air bag replacement. Driver's bag: http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/ind...996&catalogid=2 Passenger: http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/ind...t=2&catalogid=2 Headlight: http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/ind...996&catalogid=2 Bumper cover: http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/ind...996&catalogid=2 Energy absorber: http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/ind...=12&catalogid=2 Reinforcement beam: http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/ind...996&catalogid=2 $645 + $800 + $300 + $325 + $40 + $250 = $2360 just for OEM body parts and air bags. Figure another $500 to get the bumper painted...add even more if you want somone to install all of these parts. I included all of the inner bumper componets since they are likely needed since it was slammed into a pole. Then, you still need to address the drivetrain vibrations. Engine and tranny mounts are probably $300-$500 plus installation. Add another $120 to the tab to get your local dealer to turn off the airbag malfunction light; it should be on if both airbags blew. By the time it's all set and done, you are looking at atleast $3k-$4k of damages unless you diy. She is definantly not worth $8k as is. You can get a '95 or '96 with about 100k for under $10k that needs nothing other than maintinance.
