mike brown
Looked at a lot of posts but didn't really find an answer, so I’ll ask. Bought a 96 gs 300 with 121,500 miles on it for $6800. Fair deal? Car seems to be in fair shape, but not perfect. Average for the miles. Anyway, the first night I got it the check engine light came on 15 miles after I purchased it. Took it to the dealer and they said it was one of the front o2 sensors so I had it replaced. Worked fine for day and a half and the light was back on, this time with an intermittent miss. Got the codes checked at AutoZone and they said id was P0305? - misfire on cylinder #5. Took it back to the Lexus dealer ship. We both came to the conclusion that the motor had been pressure washed and it may need a new set of wires and plugs. Dealership wanted $400 so I opted to call up a few local shops that work on Lexus - $265. They said they would like to see the codes before throwing parts on it, but the Lexus dealership had cleared the codes when I picked it up. It also seemed to be running fine so I wanted to wait under the CEL came back on. Everything was fine for about 2 weeks until my son went down a very bumpy road and he said the light came back on, but it doesn't miss. I have not driven it yet. plan to drive it myself to see if there is a miss and take it back to AutoZone to see what code comes up. If it's still misfire on #5, I’ll check the wires and cap to see if they look ok on the front end. If it's the same code I would like to clear it to see how long it takes to CEL to come back on, but last time I was at AutoZone they stated that the company would not let them clear the code. What’s the best way for me to clear the code? Take a fuse out or unhook the battery? Pos or neg side? -how long to unhook? If I disconnect the battery will I have to put the radio codes or any other codes back in? Are these the last 4 #'s of the vin? Sorry for the long post, any help appreciated. melhadri
Well, if I am understanding this correctly, your CEL is initiated intermittently. If this is the case, the codes are still avaiable in the memory of the computer. Go to AutoZone or Advance Auto Parts and have the computer scanned. The codes should still be in memory. After they print the codes for you, use the scan tool to delete the codes from memory. I believe year 96' + use the OBDII scan tool which should have the option to clear codes. This is what I used however if you search this forum you will be able to find alternative ways to clear the codes. Not sure why "AutoZone they stated that the company would not let them clear the code." They might be impling that their employees will not be able to do it for you. TurboGS300
There's 2 other 02 sensors that could cause the CEL to be triggered. You should replace them as well. Once you get it fixed, clear the codes by disconnecting the battery and stepping on the brake with it disconnected. You'll have to drive the car a little bit after your done so the ECM can relearn your driving habits. <_<
