  1. Looked at a lot of posts but didn't really find an answer, so I’ll ask. Bought a 96 gs 300 with 121,500 miles on it for $6800. Fair deal? Car seems to be in fair shape, but not perfect. Average for the miles. Anyway, the first night I got it the check engine light came on 15 miles after I purchased it. Took it to the dealer and they said it was one of the front o2 sensors so I had it replaced. Worked fine for day and a half and the light was back on, this time with an intermittent miss. Got the codes checked at AutoZone and they said id was P0305? - misfire on cylinder #5. Took it back to the Lexus dealer ship. We both came to the conclusion that the motor had been pressure washed and it may need a new set of wires and plugs. Dealership wanted $400 so I opted to call up a few local shops that work on Lexus - $265. They said they would like to see the codes before throwing parts on it, but the Lexus dealership had cleared the codes when I picked it up. It also seemed to be running fine so I wanted to wait under the CEL came back on. Everything was fine for about 2 weeks until my son went down a very bumpy road and he said the light came back on, but it doesn't miss. I have not driven it yet. plan to drive it myself to see if there is a miss and take it back to AutoZone to see what code comes up. If it's still misfire on #5, I’ll check the wires and cap to see if they look ok on the front end. If it's the same code I would like to clear it to see how long it takes to CEL to come back on, but last time I was at AutoZone they stated that the company would not let them clear the code. What’s the best way for me to clear the code? Take a fuse out or unhook the battery? Pos or neg side? -how long to unhook? If I disconnect the battery will I have to put the radio codes or any other codes back in? Are these the last 4 #'s of the vin? Sorry for the long post, any help appreciated.
  2. i bought the car from an old family friend and he offered to pay half without me even saying anything. says it never came on before so i'd prefer to believe him than not, although it is sort of strange. after taking it back to lexus and talking to a few lexus local shops, i think somebody has pressure washed the motor at one time and it may have water on #5. took it Monday and lexus dealship cleared the codes. they suggested plugs and wires. hasn't missed or come back on since, so i'll bide my time for now. btw, the lexus dealership wanted $400 for plugs/wires. talked to a brother-in-law of a guy i work with that is a retired lexus tech (and a wealth of info). he suggested 2 techs he used to work with that formed their own shop and specilize in lexus. they qouted me a price of $264. thanks for the replys.
  3. dealer wanted $682. no way. i'm going to keep looking on ebay for a while and see if i can go under $100, if not, think i'll go with the offer from pioneersuby.
  4. i see a lot of different auctions on ebay for xenon blulbs in different powers and colors at very cheap prices... 7000K XENON HID 9006 & 9005 & H3 SUPERWHITE http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...item=7954642415 for example do these really work and are they better than stock? i looked at http://www.danielsternlighting.com and it sounded like he did not think too much of them. just wondering if it is a come on or anything to them. anybody use them?
  5. any instructions on removal? I removed the 2 bolts on the drivers side to remove the changer from the bracket, then the front (of the car) passenger side bolt at the top and then i found a bottom back (again of the car) passenger side bolt that was very hard to get to. with the 4 bolts removed, the unit would move around a lot, but would not come free of the amp. looked like it still had something holding it on the bottom middle passenger side, but would move some much that it acted more like it was in a bind more than a bolt holding it. i went back and took out the bolts on the bracket to the amp thinking that the bracket would have to come with it, but still no luck. anybody done this? looked on the web, but did not see a gs trunk mount link anywhere. thanks in advance.
  6. are there THEFT CODES on CD CHANGERS? i've been looking on ebay just to see if i could find something cheap. if i find something do i need a code to make it work if i just replace the changer and not fool with the radio? WOULD I NEED THE VIN# FROM THE ORIGINAL VEHICLE AND MAKE SURE THE SERIAL# IS CLEARLY READABLE ON CHANGER SO I CAN GET THE CODE INFORMATION FROM THE DEALER? do most dealers give you this info or charge a fee? how much is the usual fee?
  7. dcfish i have emailed you. please reply mktbrwn@aol.com thanks
  8. anybody have a 1996 gs 300 standard lexus cd changer for sale? it's a trunk mounted cd changer (12 disc). think 93 -97 would fit.
  9. when you find the one you want, check it out on http://www.pricegrabber.com to compare prices. i've seen things there cheaper than used items on ebay at times. also like http://www.etronics.com as a dealer.
  10. just got a 1996 gs 300 for my son. it has a standard lexus cd radio with the trunk mounted cd changer (12 disc). push the eject button and you can here some clicking, but the cd mag never comes out. local stereo shop says it's probably not repairable. my ? is what should i get. i would relly like to limit my spending to less than $200. should i ... 1) look on ebay and buy a used 12 disc model just like this one to replace it . will any 93-97 gs models work? is there a web dealer i could contact? will i have to same problem down the road? 2) find a 96 es 6 disc unit which posts on here say it seems to be better? same ?'s on where to find one as 1. 3) look into the RF Changers such as a Pioneer CDX-FM687 6-Disc or Sony CDX-454RF 10-Disc? any other RF's to suggest? how well do these work and just what do i have to do to hook these up? 4)check into a satelite radio system and forgo the cd? 5)leave well enough alone and not do anything?
  11. i bought a 1996 gs 300 with 121500 miles on wednesday night. before we got about 20 miles away (bought ift from a person i know that sells cars on the side) the check engine light came on. took it to the dealer and they scaned it for free. needed one of the up front o2 sensors ($280 installed - sound fair?). when ahead and did it because the car seemed to run rough. seller offered to pay 1/2. got it back thursday afternoon and took it for an oil change. friday afternoon the light came on again. it sometimes idles rough and has a little bit of shutter at about 45 mph when accelarating. other times it runs ok, seems to be rougher when engine is cold. i took it to autozone for a free scan today and the code was PO305 - misfire on #5 cyclinder. auto zone thinks it may be a plug, plug wire or cap. cap and wires look pretty good from the outside. do you think this is all that's wrong? culd it be anything major that would warrant me taking the car back and asking for a refund? should i take it back to the dealer, use a lexus cert. local shop auto zone suggested that i heard good things about or elsewhere? according to lexus it had a plug (readout did not say plugs) changed at 80k. should they just change the one plug or do a complete tuneup if that's it. how much should a complete tune up run? thanks, mike
  12. ADD 20HP INTAKE SENSOR CHIP FOR ALL LEXUS IS/ES/GS/SC http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...item=7949264315 just wondering if what the ad says is true?

  16. just got a 1996 gs 300 for my son. it has a standard lexus cd radio with the trunk mounted cd changer (12 disc?). push the eject button and you can here some clicking, but the cd mag never comes out. you can pull it out by hand less than an inch, but then sticks like something is holding it. i did not want to force anything. also the mag face that you can see is just black with not writing on it, so i am not sure someone did not stick it in backwards or sideways. any suggestions?
