99 Gs300 Suspension Problem?

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I know this may be a bit vague but I've experienced a problem several times with my 99 gs300 and I'm not sure what the problem is.

Basically here is the situation. Driving on a curving downhill slope about 65-75 mph. At times the car starts to undulate forward then back and keeps getting worse (harmonics?) It gets really scary as the undulating gets so bad I feel as I'm about to lose control of the car.

Braking will cease the rocking motion, but it just starts happening again at the next curve.

Any ideas on what this might be? I was fairly loaded down at the time.

bad shocks?

Thanks.

Do a search for swaybar bushings, I think some guys have had problems with these being worn out and causing similar problems :P It could be shocks as well from the sound of it.

Check out www.lexus-parts.com

This dealer is in Texas and they sell Daizen suspension components. Might want to look into buying the polyurethane bushings for the front control arms and the OEM sway bars. I wish i could buy these at my local "Canadian" Lexus dealer. :cries:

In my experience, whenever there is uncontrolled motion of the body, it is usually related to shock absorbers. Unexplained vibration, noises, etc. are more likely to do with bushings. It would be a good idea to put your car on a lift and take a look at the shock bodies. If you see any oil on them, or evidence that there was oil on them (greasy, dirty) then you are on the right track. Pay particular attention to the tops of the housings where the chromed rod exits the top of the shock. If you have one that is bad, remember it is advised to replace them as a set (L & R). Just as well, you may choose to do all four in that case. OEM prices are not too bad but there are many alternatives as well. I have the KYB GR2's on the front of my '98. No problem with them. I did have one start leaking almost immediately after replacing the blown out OEM's though. It was replaced under KYB's lifetime warranty.
