2001 Lexus LS 430 Brake light replacement trouble

I am trying to replace the brake lights on one side of my 2001 Lexus LS 430.  The lower one was easy and when I turned the socket counterclockwise it popped out.  The upper socket (opening the trunk up at head level) will not pop out after turning counterclockwise.  Is something I don't know about holding it in place?
