Driving In Deep Water

Recommended Posts

Last Thursday September 16 we had heavy rains from hurricane Ivan in Atlanta, Georgia. It happened I was caught on a very heavy cloud burst and the water begun raising quite rapidly where I was driving, Valley road within the city of Atlanta. All the windows were closed.

So much so that all of a sudden my 1998 GS 400 started floating while carried by the current following the street.

The front wheels lost contact with the pavement and I kept the back wheels spinning to make sure the car would not stall because the exhaust was under water.

By now the rain was not super heavy and I could see ahhead for about a block. Then a I saw that the water stream ahead had some pretty big ripples and I worried what would happen when the car reached them. I could not do anything but wait and hope for the best.

Finally the car got to the ripples and just bobbled and went over them.

One more block and the pavement came up and the car just drived away. Not one dop of water inside!

The following day I had it checked and it was just fine.

"You were very lucky" I was told.

Anybody had a similar experience? Phil Alvelda
