After wipping off dust and dirt with a damp cloth, I use "Engine Detailer" (silver can) from Autozone. Not only makes all black plastic and rubber surfaces shine like new, but it also protects by adding a coat of silicone to prevent cracking. Just spray on. No need to wipe it and for only $4.00 your engine will look like a pro detailer. :)
