Great Diagnosis! Relays can go bad of their own accord. On occasion you will have one not "click" because it is not activated by battery or ign power alone, but some other action such as abs, vsc, etc.

remembering back to an experience with a school bus rear open diff. Howling noise came and went for a good while. Then it stayed. Then popping noise finally like a motor backfiring. Took it apart & found a carrier bearing fell apart. Guess it howled a bit before giving up.

I have slim jim'd many cars. Typically you have to insert the jim 1/3 from the rear of the door and angle toward rear and door handle. There is linkage there that you can possibly pull upward after hooking onto it. You will see door handle move out like as if opening. You are close at this point and need to have patience and keep digging, wiggling around and pulling up using different angles. Bend jim in or out as well. This probly won't help much as the plastic is still on, but you can sort of see what the inside of a door looks like.

Howling from the rear usually means something wrong with rear, but you could try rotating tires and make sure you don't have a bad tire first. Changing rear gear fluid certainly will not hurt. It gets pretty cold there looks like, so use of some full synthetic would do good. When draining fluid, and maybe you want to drain just a little anyway to check, see if the fluid looks like metallic swirly stuff. If so, something is wearing out. Putting synthetic in there though may help you last a bit longer even so.

You can cut the belt, but why not just move the tensioner with a wratchet and remove belt without cutting? It's a serpentine, runs everything. You will be able to make sure engine turns over, but will not run very long without alternator.

The link you use is simply private seller asking prices. KBB uses data of actual cars sold in your specific area. It's what buyers will use (or Edmunds.com, NADA.com) to negotiate a price when you are selling. Edmunds says 7300. Also, this car will not pass Maryland State Inspection, so the person buying (if the seller is honest) will be buying with the knowledge that they will have to put out money for repairs (and possibly more if there are other unseen inspection items as Maryland is very tough with inspection) before they can even get tags for the car.

Well I suppose the dealer would know. How much did they want to do it? I see you can get the part from Advance Auto Parts for $55 bearing and seal. You can get the whole hub from Sewell Lexus in Texas for 145 and I believe you wouldn't have to press the bearing out that way, just replace the hub. That would be easy DIY.

It seems like a shame to sell the car just for that. Who diagnosed that? Maybe it's a bad tire or something. A local shop could take the knuckle off and press the bearing out and replace for a lot cheaper than the dealer. That way you wouldn't have to buy the whole hub. You will probably have to ask only about $7000 according to KBB. When I sold my 98 GS300 KBB was inline with what I was able to get for it. But that was back when the economy was good and the car I sold only had 70k on it.

Sounds like the brake hose is clogged up on the right side.

When you clean the throttle body, a lot of carb cleaner goes down the intake, which is essentially fuel. So the computer will compensate for the "dumping" of fuel down the intake so it will not stall. Thus the 1900 rpm initially. It's possible that you may have accidentally unhooked or loosened a connector, vacuum line, etc. Or it is possible that an 02 sensor was damaged, but not likely unless it was about to go up. Go to advance auto parts or similar and borrow their code checking device to see what code you have.

Removed and cleaned the throttle body on my 02 gs300 this weekend. Did not mess with the TPS or other sensors. Replaced the unit and took it for a test drive. Did notice the idle speed on initial start up went up to 1900 and came down to just under 1100 after warming up. Never noticed the car doing that before. Drove the car for about 20 minutes with no problems and no check engine light. While driving the car to work this morning, the check engine light came on after about 3 minutes of driving. Is there any connection to my cleaning the throttle body with the light or maybe just a coincidence? Thanks for any insight. <_<

Lexus sometimes will occasionally send a coupon for $19.95 oil change. If you trust outside shops, they have coupons too that make changing oil yourself almost not worth it from a purely financial standpoint. You will have to buy the oil drain pan as well, an extra expense but worth it if you continue to change the oil yourself. Any local garage will recycle your used oil for you.

Did you accidentally disconnect any wires to speed sensors? You can try disconnecting the battery for 5 minutes. Then reconnecting and start car, let idle for 5, then drive. Maybe codes just need to be cleared?

See below for the page. This page has been discontinued as far as I know because it was on the Lexus CPO page and they do not sell anything as old as 2001 now. In it under packages there is a Mark Levinson package that includes HID. At the end where it says changes made to 2001 GS300 Compass is listed. If the link doesn't work I'll cut and paste. I have a new grey mirror with compass that I was going to put on my 98 but I sold it before doing that mod.

That's a nice easy simple fix. Better check that first!

Sounds like the switch. But you can check the power to the switch should be battery voltage. Then check if the wire going out to move the mirror in the direction desired, it should receive battery voltage when applied.

For a couple bucks more than the price of a Swift Mod you could get a nice intake and rear section exhaust. Both of these together will improve airflow and look way cool!

Welcome, you have great taste! Snow tires or good all season tires will make a big difference in the snow. I like Yokohama, but you can peruse TireRack and get ratings on all such things. I typically get around 18 around town and 25 highway. The fuel tank is listed for 19.8 gallons. You may be able to improve mpg with an air intake coupled with less restrictive exhaust. If you do one or the other, you may defeat the purpose of improving airflow. I believe one must be done with the other to improve mpg. Tanabe claims quiet exhaust, but some say it is loud if you're in a professional businessy type situation. Good Luck!

Here is what I would do since I do not have a scan tool. The ECM is not as probable, but I have tapped on both MAF's and ECM's and made cars stall thus replacing that component. It's not impossible that you have received a faulty new MAF, but unlikely. If you have a GS300 buddy, maybe you can use theirs as a tester.

Please check the connections at the Mass Air Flow Sensor AND the ECM. Wiggle, tug harness on both ends to try and recreate the condition. You may also tap lightly on the ECM case with a wrench to try and recreate the condition. You may either have a bad connection, wiring problem such as damaged wires, or a bad ECM. You can also check for any air leaks from vacuum lines, intake, throttle body area. Hope this helps some.
