  1. My voice recognition gal doesn"t seem to understand my requests. I ask for ADDRESS and she wants to give me restaurant icons. What can I do to get on the same page with the voice person? I have tried to speak clearly, softer, louder etc. She does understand some commands such as radio, air conditioner, but frequently she is more off than on. Help !!!

Just wait for her menstruation to pass, then you will be back in business.

  2. Back in the days of mechanical controls up-shifting an automatic (domestic and some European) under full throttle was a VERY bad thing to do. Now that most transmissions are electronically controlled, it MAY be OK. But if the lever moves a spool valve, I wouldn't do it as a routine thing. Your buddies trans was overheating, and he'll reap the rewards of that abuse with a new trans - which will teach him an expensive lesson.

Downshifting every now and then for added engine braking is fine, but it's worth remembering that brakes are a lot cheaper than transmissions. If you like shifting, get a car with a manual.

The clunk you feel is the parking brake pawl disengaging. It won't hurt anything, as they are designed to suffer much abuse. Remember though that Lexus had a huge recall on the '04 LS transmissions because in a few instances the pawl stripped teeth off of the parking gear and caused some internal shifting problems.

And as Blacktop says, the parking brake is designed to hold the car, usually up to a 30% grade, and is quite capable of doing so. In fact using the brake keeps the cables moving freely.

Your buddy is unable to over-rev the engine as all modern ECM's have engine speed limiters built in - some will drop cylinders, others will shut the engine down for a moment, but the bottom line is the computer prevents rpm's from exceeding safe levels.

In the final analysis, it's best to let the trans do it's thing, in it's own way. Put it in D and drive it.

    Amen to that!

  3. 1993 Ls400, when i steering the handle, it makes a cranky noise like ggiggiggi, gggggg. When it goes straight, no noise,

    what should i do?

That sound you just made sounds like Glenn Quagmire from the family guy series, but I believe I have the same problem so far it seems to be related to the suspension? not sure I am going to ignore it as it doesn't seem important to my vehicles stability.

  4. My car almost got towed for leaving it in a target parking lot, and in the sticker they mistook my car for a ""Toyota Lexus 2001"" not bad for a 1990. However I imagine I would have had a hard time explaining I was looking for a 1990 model on their lot.

  5. I hope the same story turns out for me, or I might have to join an Acura forum. I am not loyal to cars that nickle and dime me, unfortunately I was stuck with 2 generations of ford Taurus. Those pieces of !Removed! needed a repair of some sort every 1-2 weeks!

  6. Now I've gone and done it. The car (1990, 160m) had been running perfectly but I decided to do some routine maintenance before my daughter took the car up north for a few months. I put in new caps and rotors. The old ones were cracked but worked fine. Put in new plugs (Denso PK20R11 ND), old ones looked just fine. And new wires, the originals were still in there marked 1989. Two vacuum lines broke off this small brass sensor so I had to replace that. In the emissions part of the manual it is referred to as the EVAP BVSV. While I had the coolant drained I finally got around to replacing a leaking heater control valve at the firewall.

I start the car and it sounds fine with the initial warmup RPMs at about 1000. After a minute or two the RPMs drop to 500 as it usually does, but then it starts missing or misfiring, and then the engine stuggles to keep from choking off.

I checked all the wiring layout, made sure all the wires were fully connected. Did not tear all the way back down to check the caps and rotors. Checked all the hoses that had to be reconnected. Earlier I did spritz the air flow sensor with special MAS cleaner. It seems like a vacuum problem.

    Any suggestions guys?

    Thanks,

    1990 LS400

    1991 300CE

    2000 C280

My quick guess is either some of the wires or spark plugs are not attached right or even d.o.a try putting the originals back.

  7. I would like to find a tire that will give me long tire life and a quiet ride. I had noisy tires on the LS400 when I bought it so I gave them away and got a set of Nokian I3's that had a tread pattern that looked like they'd be a quiet tire. When I put them on, they were a lot better than the ones I took off, but after almost 20,000 miles, they sound like all the wheel bearings are bad, rotated them and more noisy on the back now but quieter on the front. What tire do I need to find that will get long tire life and still be quiet, I like the Michelin Hydro edge, but don't want to spring for that kind of money and wind up with a lot of noise, any suggestions.

I use Goodrich touring tires, quiet and smooth. But I suspect that maybe you are not running your tires at an adequate pressure? "38lbs"

  8. I was just wondering, my ls400 has a few nicks here and there does this "miracle" scratch remover stuff you see on tv really work? I suppose if it did you could be using this as a meg's replacement. But I admit I am reluctant to try it my self because the ad's are so damn annoying that I refuse to support it unless if I know it works for sure.

Like GS27? I use to love those. 'Watch me key this car!!!!!!'

I have Meguiars ScratchX and use it seldomly. I need to try it out more. The one time I did use it was on my BMW and it did not do a whole lot besides smooth up the area. The fight continues.

Why don't you try that "Meguiars ScratchX" on an inconspicuous area that has swirls and use it as buff as if it were meg and then let us know how it goes. Because technically the swirls are just small scratches caused by mother nature and wiping a car with dust without soaping it and rinsing it first. So this might act as a super car wax that you don't have to redo every week. However the cost maybe a different story, "But! if you order NOW you will not only receive 1 two ounce bottles, but instead 2 one once bottles for just $10 More!"

  9. True lighter foot=$ and that was accidentally proven on a myth busters show some time ago when they where showing how the draft behind a semi could boost your mpg 40% but as the test driver got really close in the end instead of saving more gas as he got closer to the semi he actually did worse mpg because his nerves had him beating the pedal.

  10. Hope you are doing well also, since you are selling parts how much would you charge me for the ac unit panel? Image> post-75088-1215710241_thumb.jpg

If you can post it on ebay with a reasonable buy it now price I can get it there too. My lcd part of it is distorted beyond repair so if yours still worked before the accident I would be happy to buy it from you.

  11. I put in a K&N filter maybe..... not even 1k miles ago, I pulled it out and it was dirty as hell. Filled with bugs and debris. Almost all of the red color of the filter was gone. Surprises me after such a short time. I also noticed a small loss in my mileage lately ~1-2mpg. Maybe this is attributable to the filter???

So I put my stock filter back in and am hoping I see a positive difference.

On the plus side this prolongs the time in between oil changes, I doubt a filter will magnet more dirt and insects.

  12. I have experience with NAV units in the IT field, to me it doesn't make any sense that a cracked screen would affect its functionality. That would be like blaming a computer problem on the fact that its keyboard is just missing a key. To me this sounds like minor system corruption possibly from the heat if these use ssd based storage technology "very sensitive to heat and some ultraviolet rays" or just plain system error. If I were you I would cut a deal with them, I would say look if you can prove to me that its the little invisible "crack" in the screen thats causing this to fail then I might just have to pay out of pocket, If you can prove its my fault. But if this is purely by system design and error than thats my warranty's responsibility. I wouldnt leave without immediate action and a straight response. At least not for 60k!

  13. You know I was thinking the other day of an idea, cold air makes for more efficient combustion and hp and there are air cold air intake mods for this. But if you could somehow direct the cold air coming inside the car that cools use humans down and share it with the engine, wouldn't this make a significant mpg or hp improvement? Or maybe even build a simple ac unit into the trunk and have a pipe direct its cool air to the engine.

  14. Thanks guys, I will have a look in to it. I suppose I cant mind having a car nickel and dime me like this a bit, I guess its just the price for owning a beautiful and timeless classic. In fact its making me think real hard about actually cleaning out the garage to make it my Lexus workshop instead of the storage/garbage dump it is now. Also I got complimented yesterday about the car, really is a great car.

  15. I just purchased a silver 1990 ls400 w/170000 miles. The car is Great! I could say I purchased it just based on reviews alone! "4.9 of 5 stars KBB" But I noticed that there is a clunking or clanking noise when I steer on a corner while moving or sometimes though not sure when I go over a bump. Is there any way to tell what this is for sure? I purchased this car for reliability to escape the curse of being nickel and dimed, but hopefully this will be a quick fix and I should not expect to have further problems right? Also I paid 2500 for this car, would you say that is a good price?

    Thanks

    /John

I figured it out, The axles need to be replaced, I guess the word clunking doesn't make any sense because I got more results when I started searching threads and the search engines for "popping sounds" LOL

  16. I plan on upgrading a few things to see if I can improve my gas millage and I am wondering if its worth spending about $800-1000. I will put some iridium long lasting spark plugs, performance filter, high grade synthetic oil, and then regulate the air pressure on all tires and upgrade the ignition system further with an Ignition Amplifier, Ignition Capacitor, and a Voltage Regulator. I guesstimate that would allow me to squeeze 1-2mpg. Does anyone have some suggestions?
