With most vehicles... starting what year I'm not sure... the ECU will retain the total mileage but it doesn't "tell" the odometer what to read. For instance, if a car really has 50,000 miles on it but the speedometer was unplugged for 10,000 miles the ECU would show 50K miles but the odo would show 40K... make sense?
