  1. Last September, the A/C went out on my 94LS. 118M. A/C light blinking, no A/C. Upon advice of this forum, I bought a squeeze and filler w/gauge. Filled the system with one can of leak sealer, it wouldn't take the second, so I let it alone, since here in Vegas, I felt that I didn't need to have the mechanic look at it until next May. But I cheated, and turned it on a week later. No workee.

Today, a nice 70 degree day, I couldn't resist trying it again. And the A/C worked like a charm. For 20 miles. So the question is simply-anybody ever go through this experience? The pressure gauge on the squeeze thingy seems low, but not too low...Any thoughts are appreciated.

I used it to keep the A/C on my 91 Caddy alive for a few months last year.!st can lasted about 3 months with each subsequent refill lasting a shorter period.

  2. I have a 1990 LS400. About four years ago the factory AC compressor died and I stupidly bought a rebuilt compressor on ebay and had it installed. It worked great but now there's a loud squeaking noise coming from it whether the AC is on or off. Interestingly the AC still works great when activated but there's an additional loud whirring noise to boot.

Toyota dealership wants roughly 1000 dollars in parts and labor to replace the compressor. Since I won't need AC during the winter, I'm wondering if it would be safe/possible to bypass the compressor all together with a smaller serpentine belt. If this would work would anyone know what size serpentine I would need?

    I appreciate any feedback.

I did this to my Cadillac last year while I was on a trip and it worked fine.

  3. I have a 96 ls and the tilt steering wont move down, only out and in. When i try to move it down it wont and it makes a buzzing noise. Any advice would be helpfull. thanks

Do a search for tilt steering problems and you should find your solution. The gear has slipped off the shaft and you will need to add a few hose washers to it to get it to mate up again.Easy fix that only takes about 20 minutes to accomplish.I did it to my 95 a few months ago and everything works fine again.Good luck

  4. I'm right there with you. I haven't found info elsewhere yet, i started here. Some days I don't get up past 30 mph for several blocks and have no idea how fast I'm going. The speedometer seems to come back between 30-40mph. Sometimes the tach is dead too. Or only the tach is dead and the speedometer works. I'm not sure why it annoys me so much, but I almost feel sorry for the car, it looks dead with the needles like that. Every time I want to show someone, it works again. My mechanic already warned me that it will be in the dash.

    I love my car, I love my car, I love my car . . . . .

I am in the Sunshine state also!Mine does the same thing although it is less frequent than when I bought my 95 a few months ago.Slight smack on the top of dash usually wakes it up.I probably look like I have anger management issues though driving down the road hitting my dash.LOL

  5. I JUST HAD MY RADIATOR FLUSHED AND MY TRUSTED MECHANIC WHO HAS NEVER DONE ME WRONG PUT GREEN COOLANT IN MY LS!!

I TOLD HIM THAT IT NEEDS THE RED STUFF, BUT HE SAID IT DIDN'T MATTER.....!!

WILL THIS HURT MY ENGINE?? SHOULD I CHANGE IT ASAP, OR CAN I CHANGE IT NEXT FLUSH?

Green was all we had for years and we survived!Get it swapped with the next flush. As an aside,I drive a 18 wheeler for a living and we used red coolant in our fleet when we purchased 04' Freightliners and the coolant actually etched the cylinder liners causing major engine damage to about 25 of them.I am not sure who the supplier was but after that episode I am not too hot on the red stuff!

  6. I had the same problem with my 95.Took both lenses off and replaced both bulbs. Also bought new lenses off ebay to replace the tired ones that were cracked in a few places.Looks great from the outside but corner lights still don;t work.Getting tired of fixing this used one that I bought a few months ago so I am letting it sit and will get to it when I am in a better frame of mind.

  7. Finally was able to fix something!!! Yesterday afternoon, I went outside and fixed the steering wheel. It took me about 10mins at the most. My gear is kinda warped and the teeth were not making contact. I loosened the wheel and placed a washer behind it. All is well now :D

i would like to know how and what size washers to put on the wheel, mines went out on me when replacing p/s pump and re-connecting my altenator/battery!it wouldn't come down when inserting the key in the ignition, need help,i feel like i'm driving a school bus!!!!!!!!! HELP ME SOMEONE????? :(

I recently had to add 2 washers to mine.I purchased 2 rubber hose washers from Ace hardware for 42cents.Spent about 15 minutes taking it apart and puting back together and was back in business. The gear eventually gets pushed past the drive and loses contact. The washers bring it out so the gear meshes again.Make sure you use some lube on the gear when you put back together.I am no mechanic as I have stated before but anyone can do this job.Dealer won't repair but will replace the whole assembly for about $800

  8. It's done. I was asking for a round about figure, I'm aware of all the variables. I can't imagine bringing my 18 year old car to the dealership for something as simple as a brake job. Anyway the indy charged 430 for brakes rotors and calipers.

For a 4 wheel brake job I paid $870.Included was 1 caliper replacement plus 2 new rear rotors.Midas did the job for me while I was on road in NY.I used them because of their warranty.Expensive but I know it was done right

  9. Sounds like you got a steal my friend!Congrats!I had Lakeland Toyota do my timing belt service along with the water pump, thermostat, plugs and cam seals which were beginning to leak. Also had both tensioners replace!Had it for a day but gave me a loaner.Using Lexus parts it came to $1390 which I thought was a little steep.I also believe Kendall Toyota in Miami area had done some work for a previous owner

  10. Finally, you will need 2 asperin and a cold beer to ease the pain in your back from laying in the trunk.

    Go get it.

It also helps if you can find a really small person with small arms and hands that you can direct to do the work for you. They fit into the trunk a lot better than large types and their short arms make it easy to get at the harness. So instead of aspirin, you can concentrate on the beer.

My 95 works perfectly but I did the 2 aspirin and a cold beer just to be sure!LOL

  11. i ended up not getting the car. my next car is gonna be a nice clean 5-speed civic ex. i just need to find a 96+ for a good price. $80 fillups are scaring me a bit.

Getting so $80 fillups are not filling it up anymore.

  12. Newbie here gang.Wondering if anyone knows of any good independent mechanics in the Orlando/Tampa Florida area.I would prefer an independent over a dealer. My 95 will be in need of a timing belt shortly. Thanks

Today I'm having an independent in the Orlando area change the timing belt on my wife's 2000.

Check with me in a couple of days.

Hi Dark Horse.I just had Lakeland Toyota change it for me yesterday.I also had them do the waterpump and both tensioners.Along with a fresh thermostat and replacing the cam seals too which were starting to leak. They charged a little over $1300 which I thought was high but they were convenient to me and gave me a loaner car for the day.I was nervous about driving it with the original belt on it.

Hopefully I can get another 100000 miles out of it and can complain about changing it ;) again

  13. Not sure if I agree about the impact of new cabin filters. A crooked immigrant brake mechanic tried to charge me for new filters last summer, but I told him I had just replaced them. Which I had. So 2 weeks ago, I went to check my filters, and found they were missing. Gee, I wonder who got the used filters in their old Lexus. The most amazing thing is that I also got the printout from the only Lexus dealer here, and it said they had installed cabin filters for the original owner at 60,000 miles. I got the car at 76,000 miles, and guess what-no cabin filters.

Anyway, I just started using the A/C here in Vegas. Installed new cabin filters. Didn't notice any difference on the A/C. I'm just glad the A/C still works. The immigrant had told me the A/C was shot, and it would cost $1,100 to fix it. I told him to get lost. So I'm just happy that it works. You get what you pay for amigo.....If you live in Vegas, avoid Royalty Auto repair.

I had a case of the missing cabin air filter also on my 95!I went to replace it and found that it was missing. No wonder the cabin had a funny smell.I also replaced my girlfriends filter on her 01 Avalon. It was the original filter and it was nasty.I guess they really do make a difference

  14. Hi:

I now am the owner of a 96 Lexus LS400 with 94K miles on it. I know the original owner and I have just checked with the Lexus dealer. He sent me the maintenance reports and also told me that this car has been well maintained. He said the timing belt was changed at 88K. It has some little (I Think) issues and one big issue. It needs a paint job! It has been sitting by the ocean for a few years and the side facing the ocean is faded. I asked the Lexus dealer what a paint job would cost and he said 5 to 6 thousand dollars. That's out of my league. Has anyone gone to a good auto body shop and had their car painted? I really don't want to go to a Macco as I heard they don't do that good.

The minor problems I have had so far is the needle on the speedometer stopped working, and then it starts working. I did renew some of your post. One said you could remove and repair it yourself. Was it hard?

The other problem I think I just fixed -don't know how but it now works. We could not roll down the passenger's windows. Where it now appears to work does that sound like a lose wire? Or does this work off a fuse.

Any info you can give me will be a great help. My husband drives a Cadillac and he has been driving the Lexus and says it is a really nice riding car.

    Chris

    Hi Chris,

Fellow Floridian here.Sorry to hear about the paint fade.Shop around at a few body shops and I am sure you can find one much cheaper than that.My speedometer needle does the same thing as yours. It sometimes sticks and then springs back to life.I have just gotten used to it.Sounds like a short with the windows.

  15. I'm told by a reliable source that the reason to run premium when recommended vs regular (computers and kinock sensors accomdate that change) is a moisture issue. Apparently in the long term, an engine set to burn premium will accumulate less moisture in an engine when run on premium than on regular. Engines, of course can rot from the inside even when performing fine on a particular tank of gas. Since learning that, I run my 2000 LS on premium only and these days just try to grin and bear it at the pump as my fillups approach the $100 mark here on Long Island. Anyone know anything about this moisture issue?

Yikes!I am about to make a trip to the Island on Monday! :o
