  1. Try to re-create the problem tomorrow.

See if it does it again. Not sure if it's electrical, or a vacuum leak at this point.

Do the 'pull engine codes' thing and post them.

Put your model year in your avatar box so we know what issues to look for.

I tried again and it took about 4 tries to make it happen again.

    There are no engine codes

    I have a 1991 LS

  2. Morning everyone,

This morning I was trying to get on the interstate, and a truck was in my way. So, I pressed the power button and mashed the gas so I could hit the kick down switch. Instead of getting the passing power I got a CEL "trac off" and "trac" lit on my instrument cluster. I drove about 10 miles to work at 70-80mph with all 3 lights lit up. When I exited the interstate, the CEL and "trac off" light went off. The "trac" light stayed lit till I turned off my car. Anyone got a clue on what could be causing this? Also once the CEL comes on shouldn't it stay on till the matter is resolved?

  3. Hey everyone,

I have a 91 LS with the Pioneer system. I recently purchased the car and I am noticing when I go into CD mode I only hear sound out of the pass side of the car. When I toggle the balance from left to right I hear only the deepest of bass notes coming out of the left side. I hear sound out of all speakers when I am in the radio mode. Also my sub is not functioning in any mode. Could all of this be amp related or should I look elsewhere?

Sounds like your amp is going out.

Is the amp under the CD changer?

  5. I just reread you original post:
note: I have new rotors and distributor caps, but have not installed those as of yet.

    And it's a 91?

Yeah, it could be that as well. If the spark plugs aren't firing, then gas is being pushed into the exhaust and causing the rest of the issues your expereincing. I originally read this as you just had them replaced, not have them but not installed yet.

Correct I have not put in the new rotors and distributors because you have to take the radiator and fan out to get them in and I didn't have time with the storm approaching.

  6. Guys and gals, I am at my wits end with my Lex. I have a '91 LS 400. I am getting a severe misfire. I am idling at 500rpm and when I throttle the car up, it seems to stumble then also. I am smelling raw gas out the exhaust and it takes putting the accelerator to the floor to climb the slight incline into my driveway. I just changed the wires and put all new Denso Iridium plugs in. NO change, still running terrible. Any suggestions before I have this thing towed to the dealer. note: I have new rotors and distributor caps, but have not installed those as of yet.

Gee, still haven't gotten it fixed??

It has reappeared!!!! Due to Gustav the dealer is not open and I need a car.

  7. Have you pulled the codes?

    Do that 1st.

Also, check the trunk hinge wire harness.

I am getting no codes. The check engine light has not come on (it does work). Also, for a moment I had the brake failure light come on and has not come back on since. I looked at the trunk wiring where it sits in that black holder and all the wires were fine. Do I need to pull the black strip off of the "U" section of the actual trunk hinge?

  9. Vroom8 I know this has probably been beaten to death but, when i got my '91 LS it had 300,000 miles on it. I switched to Mobil 1 5w-30 with no problems. I had no leaks as of 330,000 miles when it got totalled. I just purchased another '91 with 130,000 miles and I will be going mobil one also.

  10. If you're not a diy, why spend time diagnosing a problem car you're interested in purchasing when there are so many out there without problems? My advice, spend your time looking for a better car instead!

I guess I wanted it because it was in such good physical shape. I have never seen better leather, low mileage, or a working LCD...LOL

From what you have described, you may have a misfiring engine causing excess fuel to be dumped into the cat resulting in a red hot cherry cat. It is difficult to say if any damage had been done; chances are if you still feel a pretty good exhaust flow from the tailpipe no harm was done. And if the misfiring is corrected, you may not have any further problem with the cat.

    Good Luck,

    N.C.O.

Thanks N.C.O. talked the guy down to $3500 and bought the car. Went to Lexus got a new coil pack and changed it out. Car is running fine now with NO misfire or glowing pass side cat.

  12. Anyone got an answer???

Sounds like the cat is plugged up and needs replacing. I would NOT worry about the damaging the cat, I'd be worried about overheating the engine or cooking some exhaust valves.

Does my MAJOR misfire have anything to do with it? I mean I haven't purchased the car yet, and I might use this as a little more leverage to talk the guy down on it. I need to know if I destroyed it.

  13. Hey guys, I am still currently test driving a 91 LS 400 that I am thinking about purchasing. This morning I got into the car and tried driving to work and I was suffering the low idle issue. The car started misfiring and would not really get moving so by the time I was able to pull over the exhaust was smoking and the pass side cat was red hot. Did I destroy the cat or will it be fine after it cools down?

  14. Okay guys,

I know I have asked for alot of opinions from you guys but I need one more. I am looking at a 1991 LS 400 with 130k. Interior is in great shape, the climate control LCD is NOT burned out (first one I have ever seen not burned out) It has the factory Pioneer system with fully functioning CD changer in the trunk along with about 8 extra CD magazines. Here are the only problems: Slight surge in engine while at idle. Seems to want to drop below 650 and the computer pulls it back up to correct idle, the power antenna does not work, the a/c compressor is making some noise. They are asking $4400 which I am sure I can pick it up for less than that. I am also bringing it to Lexus for a full check up tomorrow. I will also be running a carfax on the car. Is this a good deal or a bad deal?

  15. Yeah....just like God required a pastor and his wife to buy a new Mercedes SL600 and Bentely several years ago....that my former employer "idiots" three months later got to enjoy driving to lunch from the repo lot next to his office. Guess God forgot to make the payments and not commit intentional fruad to a federal institution via doctored income receipts and false tax returns....Ooops...

Last time I checked, God works in mysterious ways with some lessons learned the hard way. Sounds like you've already learned that lesson and was smart enough to not need it taught to you again. Good move.

I live in the land of Jimmy Swaggart. One of the biggest religious idiots on earth. How you going to go and play with a prostitute 35 miles from your religious camp? Also his famous "i live in a two bedroom home" line. If that house he lives in is a two bedroom, those are the biggest bedrooms on earth!!!!!

  16. Just to give you guys an update: I went and looked at the car for sale. It is at a dealership that is run by religious fanatics. When i got into the car I found it smelled a little funny. Also there was no heated seats and it was honestly just a little too plain for my taste. To top it all off, I told the guy there were some issues with the carfax and that I needed some documentation on the car being there was none. He became quite the !Removed! and said GOD WILL NOT LET ME SELL A BAD CAR. YOU DON'T NEED DOCUMENTATION FOR THIS CAR BECAUSE GOD IS ON YOUR SIDE. So I told him "By all means stick this car in your A$$ and pray to god you don't go to hell for lying." So after I "blessed" him I left the dealership and haven't been back. I am now back at square one with the lexus hunt.

  17. No way would I pay that for a '97. I just bought a very nice '99 with 160k miles in Covington 2 weeks ago for $8,000....

Ya b*stard....That is the one I was going to buy if I think it is the same one. When I made it to Covington the guy was like, oh I just sold it to a guy from North Louisiana....LOL Blake's think alike. I checked all the doors and I did see that everything matched up. I also noticed the timing belt sticker was done, but what is getting me on this car is the fact that it is a base model without heated seats even. Also it has a funny smell inside, sorta like they are trying to cover up a heavy smoker so I think I will pass on this one. The mileage is correct on the car at 140k.
