Total Distortion

So my GF's 01 rx300 with 106k, the trans is on it's way out. When she's coming to a stop it downshifts really hard. Just wondering if I should even bother changing the fluid and filters or just let it go? I can't remember the last time i changed the ATF, maybe about a year and a half at most? No more than 15k miles.
