In general the newer models are interference engines.

Ive changed oil on my van (mercury villager) and old car (nissan 240sx) so wanted to see if there was anything to be cautious of? Does the air filter need changed every 5k? Seemed to be expensive is the reason I ask.
Whats the $2 gasket he sold me (just asked if I needed one...I said I guess!)
How many quarts should it take?
I take it you do not have the owner’s manual.
Normal maintenance intervals for your car are:
Air cleaner is every 30k
Cabin air filter is every 7.5k
Oil is SAE 5W-30
W/O filter - 5.4 qt
W/ filter – 5.7 qt

My 1998 GS400 with standard OE radio now has a fading LED display. The display is 95% faded out so I can't see the stations. Is there a fix for this problem?
I would contact FCSR http://www.carstereohelp.com/
I did business with them a few years back on another Lexus and the owner is an honest guy.

That includes the timing belt, which is 625.00 by itself. I am debating on whether or not to have the timing
belt changed.
Reminds me of the old Fram commercials, “You can pay me now or pay me later”.
The 2JZ-GE is an interference engine. You lunch that belt and $625.00 will look like a wet dream to get out of that mistake.

There is nothing the dealer can do that an independent shop can't. If it's a competent shop there is no reason not to have the work done there. You can also have a Toyota dealer do the work for generally considerably less than Lexus, but that still may be more than your independent shop.
