  1. I would suggest you start by reading the owners manual(s). There you will find an explanation to this question (and probably many others). Have you changed the battery on the dead key? There are a number of interesting things in the owners manual regarding the smart keys, in addition to the tidbit mentoned above. It took me several days to read mine, but the owners manual(s) should be rquired reading in a vehicle as complex as a Lexus. Vern Vern, Yes - I did review and read most of the manual (too much to read each page) and since discovered by trial and error there are 2 smart keys, and one valet key (valet has no trunk or glove box access) then the emergency key. The two smart keys function as expected with keyless start as well lighting etc. The Valet key must be inserted to start the car and does not open the trunk. Now that we understand the keys and functions we will each have a smart key and then leave the valet key in the drawer since the occasion to use valet are very limited to warrant carrying an extra key - or I suppose we could keep the valet in the glove box? What do other smart key owners do?
  2. Thanks for the feedback 03white - this was a very nice step up from a E300D in every way. I have some small concerns around the basic stuff and what should be expected from the dealer as part of original and CPO as it seems the CPO takes precedence for the second owner. Matters like the DVD upgrade, trunk gas struts lift VERY slow and needs some help, one smart key works in recognition mode (lighting and unlocking the doors automatically) the other two seem "dumb" in this regard, and one lacks the remote trunk release ( a hollow depression in the trunk unlock smart key) so these are just a sampling of my questons. Other maintenance aspects and questions - like what is expected brake pad life with 80% Hwy 20% local driving, and I also hear from my friends with Lexus vehicles the service depts vary a lot so I want to find the best local dealer - does anyone in the NE Ma or NH area have an opinion of IRA in Danvers or Manchester NH? The other aspect of the CPO does Lexus require the 30/60/90 services to be done by them to honor the CPO? The reason I ask is the closest dealer (IRA) is 40 Mi and the originalting dealer is 70 mi. I will return to the origination delaer for the included 5K service. So at the end of the day I will take it one day at a time and enjoy this great car.
  3. June 1 we took delivery of a Mercury Metallic/Black Int. LS 430 Ultra. This was after test driving the 07 Avalon and then a Toyota dealer said take this for a ride - well it was a 04 LS 430. My wife said "now this is a CAR" so we agree on one thing anyway So off I went in search of an 04 or 05 LS and found what I think was a nice car - but that is one of the reasons for writing. We ended up with a 04 LS430 Ultra with 17K mi with the CPO extended to 5 yr 125K for $41K. After doing the P&S agreement with the finance manager for $39K and looking into the forum here as well the amount of electronics in this car I called back and added the 2 yrs 25K over the 3 yr 100K CPO since my gut tells me that having the extra two years is worth $1800 since we will put on 20K Mi P/Y and we would be at 80K after 3 yrs and about 120K in 5. Having a Toyota Tundra SR5 V8 since new in Dec 99 I know Toyota is solid so not sure if I spent $ wisely or not. Now to the details - I did research the car VIN as well have complete service history (original and current dealer sold and serviced the car) was provided and I learned about transmission issues and fuel pump issues on this forum. Lexus Recall- Replaced Tranmission 9/10/04 @ 4800 Mi Lexus Recall - Replaced Fuel Pump - 9/10/04 @ 4800 Mi Replace Update DVD NAV - 1/31/05 15,000 Mi Service 11/03/06 Replace Battery @ 11,000 mi 1/1/06 and @ 17,000 Mi 3/10/07 Why does this car like batteries? So does this resolve the issues around the transmission and fuel pump and NAV on this model? Are there any specific things to look out for? Should we have the latest NAV update done by the dealer? I asked and got sort of blank stares from the sales department when I requested the latest DVD update - "they would check into it". Now to the CPO warranty - what I understand is this adresses all aspects except wear items - e.g. wipers, tires, brakes, exhaust, and normal maintenance itemes - is there anything that we should be aware of under the original 4/50 warranty since that runs out Dec this year or is the CPO only in effect now? THank you for listening and I do appreciate feedback - by the way - its an awesome car - met and exceeded expectations thus far. Carl
