  1. I know there have been previous posts regarding this topic, but...

For my 2001 GS430, I have 225/60/16 Winter tires on stock 16" wheels. The original tires were 225/55/16's. Will the taller sidewall make a big deal. I figured the size difference makes the speedometer read 2 mph SLOWER (less rotations). Will this affect the transmission, computer, etc?

I only use this wheel/tire combination during winter months as I have summer tires/17" wheels.

Thanks in advance for any information.

As long as all of the tires are the same size, you will be fine.

  2. My driver side headlights have been out for about two weeks, now and i finally just received my new bulbs (6000k). And after i put the new bulbs on only the passenger side lights up. I switch the bulbs from the passenger to the driver side and it still didnt turn on. I also checked the fuse's already. Can it be the ballast or wiring harness? Or where can i check to see where the problem is located at.

    Thanks

I would bet that a ballast went bad. Did you try the old driver side bulb in the passenger side to see if it was actually bad?

I have the same problem on the passenger side. Where can I pick up a replacement ballast?

Are they factory HIDs? If so, start looking on Ebay because I am willing to bet Lexus charges a fortune. If they are aftermarket, you may be better off just buying a new kit, since you can get them pretty cheap.

  3. Hey Guys & Gals,

Just purchased the following from IronToad.com for my 1999 GS 300

Have any of you had good or bad luck with this site?

I can't believe how much Lexus and Toyoyta over price their parts, it seems a little excessive.

    Rear brake pads

    Code:04466-30161

    Price: $45.00

    Quantity in Basket: 1

    Front Brake Pads

    Code:04465-22312

    Price: $45.00

    Quantity in Basket: 1

    Thanks,

    JT

This is from www.rockautoparts.com, where I buy most of my parts, and I think you can see why:

    RAYBESTOS Part # SGD619C More Info {Service Grade; Ceramic}

    Front; OE Ceramic; Recommended Replacement

    $24.79

    RAYBESTOS Part # SGD771C More Info {Service Grade; Ceramic}

    Rear; OE Ceramic; Recommended Replacement

    $17.80

The service and shipping is great from these guys. I use them all of the time. Also, after you buy from them, they email you discount codes quite often, usually 10%-20% off of your next order.

  4. Rear GS calipers are not the floating variety. There is a piston on each side of this fixed caliper. The best advice would be to replace the caliper with a remanufactured unit. They are readily available. NAPA parts should be fine.

As for rotors, the only caution is to check that the clearance groove on the back side of the rotor does not rub the back pan when the rotor is installed. The pan is the round plate that the parking brake assembly is mounted on. It has a slight edge the fits into the groove on the back of the rotor. The purpose of this pan is to keep road crap out of the parking brake system inside the rotor hat. I have had trouble with several brands of aftermarket rotors not being made correctly. Consequently, when the wheel is mounted, the pan can contact the rotor and create metal to metal rubbing sound. In one case, I the groove was so shallow, I could not turn the mounted wheel at all. If you experience a problem, just return them and try another brand.

Don't forget to bleed the brakes if you replace the caliper. The parking brake shoes also have to be adjusted after replacing the rotor. The service manual shows the procedures in detail.

RockAutoParts has rear calipers for just under $60 a piece, made by A-1 CARDONE, and rear rotors for under $20 a piece, made by Raybestos. I have bought many parts from them, and they are outstanding. Oh, and rear pads, also by Raybestos, are under $20 as well. Hope this helps you out. www.rockautoparts.com

  5. I have a 2000 GS 300...I'm looking perhaps after the holidays to re-do my interior speakers and also purchase and in dash (not flip out) unit to replace my factory radio. i have already purchased a portable navigation system and it works great (garmin). i do not necessarily need a unit with navigation but if it comes with it and it is a separate slot for the navigation disc then i will gladly give up my portable unit. Any input would be greatly appreciated...thanks.

I have had a Pioneer AVIC-D2 for a while now, and I love it. It is a great unit. There are newer versions out there, but they all use the same map discs for the most part. And you can get it for much cheaper than the new ones. It is not a flip out, though. It is a full touch screen that folds down and behind the screen is a slot for the navigation DVD as well as a slot for CD/MP3/WMA, etc. You can get the XM or Siruis tuner if you want, but with XM you can get XM NavTraffic, which is pretty cool. You can hook an iPod to it, Bluetooth, rear camera, etc. It is worth checking out in my opinion. Also, in my old Lexus, I had Eclipse speakers all around and they sounded beautiful. Hope this helps.

Do you happen to know what sizes those speakers were? Impedance, size, everything? and do you know if the first gen GS and second gen GS have the same size speakers?

    Thanks,

    ~rob

Sorry, but I do not remember the impedance or anything. They were in an ES300 anyway, so they may not have even been what you want for a GS. However I can tell you that the 2nd gen GS has 6.5" front and back, and so does the 1st gen. I hope this helps you.

  7. I also would like to know how things turn out.... I was in a bad accident and totalled ou my 02 IS300, so i decided to upgrade a bit and just picked up 03 GS300, black w/ tan... i love it, only thing its missing, is rims, and of course the NAV system, and i have called all the Lexus dealers and they said if you have a non nav system tey will not put a nav system in. so looks like i am going to have to go with an aftermarket one..... please post pics and give any suggestions if possible.

My main concern is i don't like the way aftermarket streo kits look so fake compared to the factory look that surrounds it!

I was supposed to have it installed today, but the shop canceled my appointment, apparently because of Virginia Tech shooting-like threats at NIU here. What that has to do with an audio store, I have no idea. So, now I gotta reschedule....maybe with a different place.

  9. Hey wats up.. I was parking last nite.. N I scratched the tired against the curve... Now I checked it this morning and part of the rubber is hanging off.. Its not REALLY bad.. but its deep enough to notice it.. now what happens.. does this mean I have to buy new tires.. I dont want it 2 blow out on me??

Can you see any of the sidewall material? If you can see anything other than rubber, I sure wouldn't drive it.

  10. Just curious to see what kinda mileage you are all getting...Ive been averaging anout 23 and thats getting 92-93 octane - I didnt fill it with 87 once and didnt notice any difference driving wise or MPG wise - which I thought was odd. Its very flat here in indiana and its a pretty good mix of city-hwy driving.

Not sure if their is anything I can do to increase my gas mileage ?

Anyone put a CAI in their lexus - wondering how much boost that will give me and if it helps out gas mileage?

    TIA

    Ross

I have 99 lexus with 85k miles. Lexus maintained since birth. 22 mpg city = I run 92-93 octane. I have a light foot which I can tell you from experience makes a big difference in gas mileage.

Easier said than done when you live here in IL, where they do not know how to plow the damn roads and the tires spend more time spinning than propelling the vehicle forward. I think since it started snowing I am getting somewhere around 5 or 6 mpg. Haha

  11. Its the labor that cost the big bucks... and maybe the water pump... the belt itself isn't so much unless you're buying it from the dealer or getting a kevlar belt like this one...

    http://www.mvpmotorsports.com/Templates/fr...&SearchYN=N

That HKS belt is a nice one. My buddy runs an HKS belt on his Mitsubishi Evolution II (600WHP) and it takes quite a bit of abuse as far as timing belts go. But for a daily driver, and even mildly modified, I wouldn't see the need for a belt like that. Gates makes damn fine belts as well.

  12. You may have corrosion locking the wheel flange to the hub. Take a large rubber hammer, or a piece of 4x4 fence post, and whack the outer sidewall of the tire inwards to tilt the flange. It should pop off quickly.

Usually what I do is put one lug nut back on a few threads, and give the sidewall a good kick. Most of the time this works. If not, bust out the big hammer. Just try not to hit the rim if it isn't rubber  Good luck.

  13. Hey whats up again.. I was looking to buy a new timing belt.. Im almost at my 90k.... Everyone is talking about how much it is to change.. but look at this web site... This is cheap isnt it??? This is all you need to change it right?? Timing belt and chain???

    http://www.car-stuff.com/mmparts/lexus-gs3...iming_belt.html

They aren't expensive. www.rockautoparts.com has a Gates timing belt for $20, and a Dayco tensioner for $37. I think when people were talking about how much it cost to have it done, they were talking about labor prices, if you pay to have it done by a shop. Good luck!

  14. waz up every1 i have a 94 gs300 twin turbo bad !Removed! 2jz-gte but when i stand it up only the left rear spins but if im pullin out a corner to the right then the right will spin then.. whats up with that is that normal or does these models come with LSD and TRC

    Huh?

Congratulations. You have an open differential. Thats normal. I think that answers your question.....right?

  15. I had read that you can still use the factory cd changer with an aftermarket head unit, assuming the unit is Pioneer. So, I have a AVIC-D2 that I want to put in, and I was wondering if since I have the IP Bus ports, this will work? How do I control the changer? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I just got this car today. The old ES300 is gone, and now I am rolling in a 1999 GS300 that I picked up with only 27,000 miles! Very happy with the car, the only thing it is lacking is my navigation unit :)

    Thanks!

    Hi guys,

Congrats on your new Nav system. I have been looking at a few Nav, DVD systems for my 2002 gs300. My fear is that it comes out looking badly put together. It would be great to see how your install came out.

I will certainly post some pics when it is finished.

  16. I've had this car since new and lately I had a problem w/passenger front door not locking. Won't lock manually or w/key remote. NOW, when I shut the motor off and exit the car, as soon as I close the door...ALL the windows open and I have to get back in and manually close them. When this happens, the only way to stop it is to go the the passenger front window and lock it w/ the key then set the alarm.

I am completely baffled here. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.... Robert

Is your unlock button sticking on your remote? I know on mine if you hold the unlock button, all of the windows will roll down and the sunroof will open. Just a thought.

  17. I have a 98 GS300 AND need help on How to replace my License plate light bulb?

sorry man, i think it's so stupid question.

open trunk, i really guess u know how it's to open :)

you just need to remove a covering fo trunk,

there u will find two buld, turn i change it.

i can show on picture, but only on monday.

Take it easy man--not everyone knows how to do this stuff. Thats why this forum is here. Just because something is easy, doesn't mean that everyone knows how to do it. Remember that next time you post a question--maybe someone thinks YOUR question is stupid.

  18. Ok. I found it. Yeah, it's on the older model listing, that's why I couldn't see it at first as it's not in the current lineup.

Ok, so you need a face plate and mounting kit, the wiring harness and what else?

You will need to find out if the stock amp and speakers run an a 4 ohm load, or a 2 ohm. If it's a 4 ohm, your golden. You will beable to wire in the factory amp and speakers. In that case, no, you don't have to run all new speaker wires and so fourth. All you will need to do is wire the D2 to the factory amp, set up the nav. and antenna, Sirrius if you have XFM if that. then you should be good to go.

BUt if it's a 2 ohm system like in the IS 300, then your gonna have more work ahead of you. First, you won't be able to use the factory amp. Second, it may be better to run new wire to the speakers, as splicing in may not be optimal.

I can get you the info on the mounting and face plate, wire harness, and so fourth. So let me know.

If the IS300 is 2 ohm, I am willing to bet that the GS300 is the same way. Isn't there a amplifier interface I can buy like they offer for some other cars? This just seems like such a damn hassle to put in an aftermarket stereo. I already have the dash kit. I just need to figure out if I have to run new wires or not. How do I find out what ohm load my stereo is?

  19. Hey guys, I have a few questions about installing my Pioneer AVIC-D2 in my '99 GS300. I have looked at various wiring harnesses and whatnot, but still do not know what I need. I have the base stereo--no navigation or Nakamichi--do I need an amplifier integration harness? What dash kit is best? Do I have to run all new speaker wire like I did in my ES? Does anyonw know where I can get a wiring diagram? I am trying to make this as painless as possible, and if it is going to require too much hassle, I may just pay to have it done. Is there anyone in the Northern IL area who would want to do this if I decide to have it done (I would pay, obviously)? Thanks again for all of the help.

I cut off stock stereo, i took a radio dash kit

    41d8868f3a92.jpg

    and installed into

    1din Alpine DVA-9861Ri

    6ea270dc2275.jpg

1/2din 7inch monitor w/ av adapter (no picture)

    1/2din PROLOGY DVD-500HD MkII

    25d2ff5ce8c6.jpg

total picture of full install will be on monday.

How are you bypassing the factory amp?

  20. Hello. First I would love to say I just bought a 99gs300.. and I LOVE IT.. I just joined this Forum today..
