Finally broke down and took mine to the dealership before the car laid down and left me stranded. The technician knew exactly what it was when I described it to him. It something called the "Idle air flow motor" (I believe that's what it was called). It was replaced (could not be rebuilt) and the car is running beautiful now. Was not a cheap repair so be prepared. Ran around 400 dollars.

No actually, there are no boots with pins on any of the doors. This leads me to believe that it is a magnetic switch or something built into the hinges. Any ideas?

I have a 99' RX300. AS with most cars of any make, when you open a door the interior lights come on until the door is closed or shortly thereafter. However, my front passenger door does not activate the interior light like the other doors of the car. Now, sounds like a petty problem until you realize that the security system locks the car after 30 seconds if no door is opened. Therefore, if I unlock the car to get something or do something through the passenger door, since this door does not activate the iterior light then the car security system relocks the car and sets off the alarm. On all cars that I have owned in the past there was a small post that the door would release when opened that turned on the lights, however I can not find anything on the door or door jam that activates the lights and disables the security system. Help, very frustrating at times.

I am having the same exact problem on my 99' RX300. This happens rarely on cold starts but does occur. Usually happens when the car has been running and shut off for a few minutes. Engine will turn over and fire for a second and then goes dead. Sometimes it just winds the starter. Car will finally crank after sometimes 2 or 3 tries and sometimes after 7 or 8 tries. Any suggestions?
