  1. Hello everyone, We've had our lexus for a little over 6 months (second owners) and I've been reading this forum since we got the car but I now have a problem that I can't find the answer for in the "search topics". The car has 52,000 miles on it and it won't shift into overdrive. We can't shift it into D...only 4. We took it to our local Lexus dealer yesterday(our first visit) and explained what it was doing and the technician said he knew what it was...we need a new "shifter". To the best of my knowledge the car wasn't put on a computer for tests or anything. They just came back and said we need a new "shifter" and it would be about $500. I asked if it would be covered by the powertrain warranty and they said it's not. I asked for a copy of the powertrain warranty and they let us look over a laminated form they had but said we couldn't have a copy of it. I asked for the part # and if there was a more technical term for our problem other than a "shifter"....our person said no. We asked if it would hurt the car to always drive it in 4 instead of D and they said that was fine....we'd just lose some fuel efficiency. I don't know but this was not the experience I expected from Lexus. If a car won't shift into a gear WHY wouldn't that be part of the powertrain??? What part of a car does a "shifter" belong to?? I've read about the numerous transmission problems some of these cars have but ours doesn't hesitate or jerk...it just won't shift into Drive. Does anyone have any advice on what my next move should be? Sorry for the lengthy first post...I just wanted to describe this as best as I could.
