  1. Tex, I certainly hope that whatever it is, that it is catching. I added some R-134a and the compressor will run but I can hear a lot of noises, none of them good. After running for less than a minute, it cuts off. Yeah, I know it sounds like highway robbery but that is the deal. Doing the job correctly is listed at 12 hours labor and even Toyota has to go to Lexus to get most of the parts. The tech said it is a nasty job, especially to get at the evaporator. As I have heard, one these things go then send metal particals throughout the system.

As nice as this car is, it isn't worth $2500 to me to have ac for awhile.

I can see that much if they are replacing the evaporator, that is buried in the dash. If your compressor just seized up, i would think your evaporator should be fine. The compressor is not hard at all. Couple clips, the 2 AC lines, 3 bolts and it comes right out. And, a compressor from the dealer is a TON of money. I got a used one for $75.

  2. I have converted every car I have owned, most with high mileage, to synthetic with no issues. The reports of cars burning oil after switching are just myths now. You can switch if you like. Personal preferance.

You can go longer on a synthetic than dino oil.

I run 10-30 Mobile 1 full synthetic for 5k with no issues. My car has 219k

  3. Why not just buy 2 new solenoids instead of a whole tranny.
Hey it's great (and sad) to see that someone else has the exact same problem. Let's me know that what I was looking into is what's wrong with it.

Right now I'm looking into buying a used transmission and swapping the solenoid and O/D sensor from the used one. The used trans has 106k on it and it's $300.

Whereas the brand new solenoid and sensor from Lexus would be $400.

I'll do some testing next week in my auto class and then report back.

  4. I run synthetic blend in my 97 with 215K for 5000 miles, looks pretty good even after all that. Could probably take it out to 7500.

The 3K mile oil change isn't required anymore if you ask me. Engines these days are plenty efficient and clean.

  5. A double din still would not fit 100%.

To the OP do what you will, but my advice would be to save your money for something else. Just get some subs hooked up in the back. Save The +$600 for a nice stereo and lower your car ;)

Check out the kenwood model that is a flush mount, mine look pretty close to perfect, also the factory radio is very boreing at least to me,got to go with the newer look.1 more point the problem with these Ls 400 the radio and the climate control screens fade alot on these cars, lexus really need to do better.I still think these cars are the best.My wife drives a 2006 430 benz and she likes my car better :D

You should put up a pic.
