  1. What should I expect to pay to fix a leak?
  2. At the tail end of last summer, I started experiencing major problems with my vehicles ability to keep hold in freon for more that a week. I have a 1991 LS400. Could it be that I have a leak? If so, how do I find it and how much can I expect to pay? Is this typical? I had to load up on Freon 7 times between July 2005 and October 2005. That got pretty costly. Please help. I refuse to fry this spring. Thanks
  3. I am leaking power steering fluid in my 1991 LS400. Any advice and examples (including pictures) on how to fix this problem? Thanks
  4. Can anyone give me some advice on how to stop and repair the thread splitting on the top of my back seats? I have a 91 LS400. I have two splits in the thread which are about 3.5 inches long on each side. I'd like to have it stopped and restitched. Any suggestions? Thanks.
  5. I have a 1991 LS400. The starter went bad on it and I just had it replaced with a new one. It costed me $724 (part and 5hours labor, plus 3 free hours of an additional labor). Anyway, the garage did a codes scan on the vehicle as the engine light was on when I brought it to them. I was hoping that the starter motor replacement would fix the "check engine" problem. They said that code read: 13 (RPM). Can anyone tell me what that might be? How can I fix it and what should I expect to pay?
  6. The engine on my ’91 LS400 momentarily loses rpm and power, causing a jerk, or a sequence of jerks. This is not a shudder -- as in vibration related. It usually happens intermittently and is most noticeable once I hit speeds right at 70-mph. It is like the engine starts choking up whenever there is demand for power during acceleration - especially around 70 mph. Once below 70 mph, it again runs smooth. I’ve not tried to exceed 70 mph when the problem is present. The problem is not repeatable and I have not seen any correlation with outside temperature, humidity or gas grade selection. Again, it is intermittent - pretty bad one day, no problems the next day. I primarily use Premium Gas and Very Occasionally, I use Mid-Grade. I never use Regular. Though I am very far from being a mechanic, I suspect that it’s either a clogged fuel filter or a bad injector. I gather this because my fuel indication needle doesn’t read correctly. I discovered through the embarrassing way that my vehicle is on empty when the needle is on ¼ tank instead of “E”. Any advice or suggestions?
  7. I checked the battery cables. They are on really tight with absolutely no corrosion. Anything else for me to try?
  8. I have a 1991 LS400. Recently, I've been having some serious problems starting the car. I thought it was the battery or the alternator. I had both checked at AutoZone. The battery test results were: GOOD. The alternator test was also: GOOD but amping at 60. The manager at the store told me that the problem probably exists somewhere around my ignition switch. What happens is that when I turn the car off for usually between 3 to 8 hours, I get power everwhere except enough to start the vehicle. Sometimes it will take trying 6 or 7 times before it'll finally crank. Other times, I'll try once or twice and nothing happens. But on a third attempt, it'll try to crank over. On a fourth attempt, it will crank over. Any suggestions on what I should do? I just purchased the car almost two months ago and haven't had many problems. There are also few times that when I reach 70 mph, the car acts as if it's going to shut off. It doesn't do that often, but enough for me to be concerned about it. Any suggestions about that too? Thanks. -justintime
  9. Hello All. I recently purchased a Grey 91 LS400. On the front bumper, my paint is very dull. The hardly noticeable, it no longer has the shine and luster that the rest of the body has. The rear bumper has very thin swirls at the top of it and chipped paint (about the size of a half dollar coin) on the front of it. Also, I'm beginning to get hard water marks on the hood. Any advice on how I can correct these three problems? Also, what is a good way to find out the exact paint color of my car? Thanks!
  10. Hi. I live in Nashville, TN. Recently, someone in the forum advised me to check at our local Auto Parts stores for a free codes scan. My engine light recently came on in my 91 LS400 and I was advised that having the check engine light on results into stored code. However, I checked Auto Zones and Advanced Autos here and neither of them had a code scanner that could scan vehicles older than 1996. Could someone please help me so I don't have to pay the dealership an arm and a leg of labor of a 20 second job. If at all possible, please copy your response to me at justintime4uc@yahoo.com. Thanks!
  11. I just bought a Lexus LS400 with 133,000 miles on it about a month ago. The car runs pretty good. However, about two weeks ago, the check engine light came on. Shares me half to death. I've read and heard that air pressure builds up in the gas tank and once released, the light will go off. I've also heard that if I disconnect the battery overnight and rehookup in the morning, the light will go off. The gas top thing didn't work. I haven't tried disconnecting the battery. That sounds like a temporary cover up to me. I'm the former owner of a 1995 Ford Explorer. I was told to unhook the battery cable at night when my transmission started slipping and that would correct that problem. Well, it would stop slipping temporarily, but didn't fix the real problem. The real problem was, the transmission was going bad. So I don't like that whole, "take the battery cable off so that the 'check engine light' resets' itself thing". I've also heard that the alternator could be going bad. I guess that would explain why I've had a problem or two with starting the vehicle for the last week. It acts as if it doesn't want to start at times. I've also heard that the water pump could be going bad. I'm thinking that I just may need a tune up and oil change. Any suggestions or recommendations? Also, what's included and needed for a good tune-up and how much should I expect to pay. What type of oil should I use? If you don't mind, please forward a copy of your response to me at: justintime4uc@yahoo.com. Thanks!
