  1. I've seen some playful responses escalate to full-fledged flame wars before, but never quite like this!

Please don't ban him, SW03ES - it's worth letting him simmer in his own juices long enough to see what he'll say next. Provided no one gets physically harmed, of course....

He has no choice but to ban me! He must be asleep at the wheel! Soon as he is done waxing he will take care of business!

Wow, you must be on drugs or something. Throwing away a membership? Why not donate it to someone else who could do better with it? This is the epitome of true waste.

I've seen this type of thing happen many times before, it's not a surprise to me at all. Some people just never grow up, so when things don't go their way they'll cut off their nose to spite their face and then throw a tantrum in the corner. If the admins don't mind me suggesting it, why don't you just pull his posting priveleges for a while? Let him see the forum but not cause discord with his immaturity. At least he can "simmer in his juices" without causing more trouble.:chairshot:

OK, Please mods will you give this nice person my Gold Membership!

  4. Do you honestly believe that RX's intention was that you should have consulted with Warren Buffet before purchasing your LS?

It most likley was only to irritate as was his next post and yours  .

I forget whom I am conversing with here and I should not expect a "Detailaholic" to be able to relate. Both you and RX both worked hard to pay for your vintage Lexus and I do not expect you to see things from my perspective :P

I will move on to the LX470 threads and leave you, RX and Warren to your simple fun. :)

  5. Depreciation sucks...but why all this over a bimmer? Every single car out there is going to lose a huge chunk of retail value, right? Buy what you're happy driving. I love BMW's, you guys love Lexus'. Leasing doesn't do much for your bank account, no recovery. It's sort of like investing in food....you serve it and you end up eating it anyways.

Who said anything about a BMW in reference to depreciation?

As for leasing, leasing is an extremely powerful tool depending on an individual's situation.

Uh, I said it makes me feel better. I own my own compnay and did not need "the lecture" on when to buy and sell. A few years ago when I was able to charge off 100% of my new LX470, I got near a $20,000 refund in taxes. There are "tax advantages" for me to do what I do, I admit sometimes they do not make perfect financial sense to others but "what makes me feel better" makes up for the loss.

Everyone's money situation is different and the same rules can not apply to all.

And I said about 5 times in my post that if you do it because you like driving a new car, more power to you. I wasn't discussing the pros and cons of what you do so much for your benefit, but for the benefit of others. There are a lot of people out there that actually think its cheaper to trade in new cars every 2 years.

I can buy what ever I want, too. The LS460 is only for about 6 months until the new LX470 replacement arrives. The difference between us is I CHOOSE to buy it. I work hard and sacrifice alot of free time to make my company what it is today, so I choose to buy (often) what I use the most in everday life, which is my vehicle.

Warren Buffet does not influence me and I really am not "behooved" to listen to him. I consider myself to be doing quite well without Warrens help.

You can not take your money with you when you die!

Greg, don't get so defensive. RX is simply sharing his point of view on the topic, as were you. You can't put a statement out onto a forum and then try and cry foul when people disagree with you.

RX's point is valid though. There's no way you can spin what you do into a smart financial move because its not. What you're saying is that you don't care, which is fine, but it doesn't make what he's saying wrong.

If having this discussion makes one person take a more serious look at their finances, then its totally worth it. Americans today have entirely too little wealth for how hard they work and how much money they make. One reason is making foolish financial decisions based on an inability to delay gratification. I work my !Removed! off too, we all do. The mantra however "I work hard and I sacrifice so I'm going to buy whatever I want" however makes MANY Americans have to work hard and sacrifice far longer than they would have had to otherwise.

Now, before you get bent out of shape remember that you obviously have significant enough assets to be able to do what you do. Most people that buy and trade cars that way however do not. This message is for those people, not you.

I personally am not as conservative as RX (I love cars, and I think buying a new one every 3-4 years is an expense that I get a lot of gratification out of), but he's got a point. If you work hard, sacrifice, AND are careful with your money there's no reason why everybody couldn't retire at 55. I hurt for people who make so many dumb financial moves because they "want it, want it now" that they wind up working far longer and enjoying life for a far shorter time than they should.

Each person's financial situation is different. I respect that but when I got:

"When Warren Buffett himself says that purchasing expensive new vehicles every few years is dumb from a financial standpoint, it behooves most of us to listen to him...."

it made me realise that this poster and I are quite far apart. The cost of the LS was not THAT big of a deal where I thought consulation with Warren Buffit was required. As I stated the LS is simply entertainment till the new LX arrives, I do not look at it as an investment or if it was a wise purchase. I simply saw it when I was having my LX serviced and I stuck my head in my salesmans office and told him I wanted one. He, as in the past, called me a couple of days later and I picked it up. I like the LS, but will be more excited, later this year when I pick up my new 2008 LX.

It never occured to me that I should ask Warren anything! I do understand that my attitude can upset some and I apologise if I have done so. I will withdraw to avoid confrontation. :o

  6. More and weaker is not better either LoL! I don't even run Overdrive unless I'm on the Highway.

The only reason I would get an 8 speed is for the fuel mileage. Plus, I would have more gears to mess with.

When/if my eight speed breaks, I think that Lexus will stand behind it. I have serious doubts that it will break.

I do see 21 MPG on the highway at around 60-70 but I did not buy it for economy. :o

  7. I manage my own assets, work for myself, and can buy any production car I want. Whether this makes me "feel better" or not, it's still a dumb financial management move and I won't do it. Twenty years ago, maybe. But today, no way. Regardless of your tax situation, the tax laws are nowhere near as favorable in this case as they were twenty years ago.

When Warren Buffett himself says that purchasing expensive new vehicles every few years is dumb from a financial standpoint, it behooves most of us to listen to him....

I can buy what ever I want, too. The LS460 is only for about 6 months until the new LX470 replacement arrives. You can not take your money with you when you die!

Thats what they used to say back when automatic transmissions were 3 speed.

I've been through 3 4-speed trannies (GM :chairshot: ), I think they shoulda stayed 3 speed or at least been much better built. 8 speeds are still asking for trouble IMHO.

GM made a two speed, also! :cries:

    Less was not better :o

  8. Trading way before the warranty is gone makes zero sense financially. If you do it because you want to and you like driving a new car, more power to you. If you do it becuase you think you're getting off cheaper than keeping the car longer term and risking some possible repairs down the line then you really need to re-examine that behavior financially. Dollar for dollar, keeping the car for 10 years is MUCH cheaper than trading a new car after two, even when you factor in repairs. The Lexus LS is one of the most reliable vehicles in the world too, the odds of needing a new transmission on one...ever are remote.

As someone who has had an LS for 160k miles and seen first hand the kind of repairs you're talking about with this car and those miles, they're extremely inexpensive. I think my dad's 98 needed a new A/C compressor one time, covered by Lexus out of warranty as a goodwill and that was the only failure ever on the car during the 6 years and 160k miles he owned it. He has an 04 now which I have far less to do with with something like 60k miles, not one failure. My ES has getting close to 90k and it had some warranty work done to the steering rack and the brakes, as well as a couple rattles fixed, (all which were TSBs from Lexus) but other than that not one failure. I've had direct experience with several other cars of various makes with mileage and trust me, these are really reliable cars.

Purchasing new and selling every two years is the absolute most expensive way to own a car. You pay the absolute maximum by buying new, and then sell it after the worst two years for depreciation. I bet it costs you $25-30,000 in depreciation to own a car like an LS460 for only two years, even more if you trade it in rather than sell it. Now, like I said if you do that because you want to always drive something new go for it. If you do it because you think its cheaper, you need to re-examine that belief.

Uh, I said it makes me feel better. :) I own my own compnay and did not need "the lecture" on when to buy and sell. :( A few years ago when I was able to charge off 100% of my new LX470, I got near a $20,000 refund in taxes. There are "tax advantages" for me to do what I do, I admit sometimes they do not make perfect financial sense to others but "what makes me feel better" makes up for the loss.

  9. Hi Guys!! :)

    I hope you're OK.

Apparently - BMW is creating an 8-speed automatic to be used in some of its future cars.

Click on THIS to read the story.

It's only a matter of time - I suppose - for Mercedes to counter with a 9 or 10 speed.

A little bit silly - don't you think?!

    Craig!! :)

I thought that 8 speed was over kill until I drove my LS460. Quite nice on the highway doing 70+ and press slightly on the gas and have it drop one gear. When you really want to go into warp drive the acceleration from 70 to over 100 is going to make you smile! :)

  10. My LS460 is three months old and I am basically happy with the car. This ,by the way, is my fourth Lexus. My others were a 1990 LS , a 1998 LS , and a 2002 RX300. The problem, if you can call it a problem is that going downhill with cruise control on ,the auto speeds up a few miles per hour. I assume that is because there is so little engine braking, At an indicated 70 MPH the engine turns 1700 RPM .Do I have to manually change gears to stop this or is there another solution that I have not thought of.

To fill you all in, my other auto is a 2006 BMW wagon (to transport my Labradoodle).

I'm also hoping that Lexus comes out with a kit so that I have an easier time with my Ipod . Had I known better, I would have gotten the Levinson radio.

    Thanks for reading. plamma

I have yet to see any cruise control that would brake if you were going down a pretty steep hill. It will stop giving the engine gas but if the hill were to be steep enough the brake would need to be applied by yourself. Having the number of gears (8), there is little resistance unless you were drop it a few gears to use engine compression.

I live in Florida and for the most part it is flat with few hills that would casue my LS460 to increase in speed.

  11. Why are you going back to the 470? Any gripes with the 460?

Why I DO love my LS460 but will want something a bit bigger and taller. I am waiting for the LX470 replacement, am number one on my dealers list. While I love the performance of the LS460, I find it hard to get in and out of compared to my trusty LX. The LS is to hold me over and I do love it!

:P lol geezus. there are people here who are dying to buy one, and your throwing it to the curb after a few months! lol i might have to make an anonymous tip to the IRS, you have too much money. lol jkjk :P

You need not make your comments anonymous to the IRS about me, they know me well. I pay my taxes and infact, if they audit me they will find me to be quite legal. I just gave them $27k in estimated taxes a few months ago and will have to do it again soon. Yes the IRS and I know each other very well! :(

Yeah I thought you loved your 460...

I DO love it, no gripes.

I just prefer bigger. I would love to have the LX470 replacement with the perfomance of the LS460. That would require about 900hp and increasing the wheel base quite a bit! :o

  12. most likely factory wheels sent out by the dealer to be dipped. You can usually tell by the fact the spare is not chromed. The factory chromed wheels always included the spare.

I am sure you are right as they said they would be exactly as what was on the unit now except in chrome. I very much liked the idea of the chrome wheels as my LS is the dark grey but after a few months, I am liking it the way it is. I will be getting the LX470 replacement late this year and the LS will go back as a trade. The chrome wheels will get me no more money.

  13. I've seen quotes at 7 to 10 years for battery life on the individual wheel units, I don't know if that is covered in the LS 460 Owners Manual. Note, if you ever have the tires repaired / removed, make sure the staff knows that the individual pressure units are there. Some other forums have stories of the wheel mechanic killing (or maybe crushing is a better word) the sensor and then being stuck with a $$$ bill for a new sensor.

    Thanks, good to know.

I will be putting new tires on mine sooner than many would think. I can visually see less rubber on the rear tires when compared to the front at only 4500 miles. I don't care, am having lots of fun!

  14. Just wondering how the tire pressure indicating system works. Where is it located, inside the wheel or what? Must be as even my spare tire pressure is indicated on the display. :(

The pressure sensors are connected to the valve stems inside each wheel. The inflation information is sent to a control unit which displays the information onto your dashboard.

So they would be battery powered, I assume?

  15. Just got the Blackberry Pearl (8100) and have only intermittently been able to link it via bluetooth with my LS460. When it is paired, it "comes and goes", losing the link unexpectedly and as unexpectedly resuming the link. Has anyone else had this problem? Prior to this, had the Motorola Razor V3 and had absolutely no problem linking and keeping the link. Both phones are through Cingular. Just wanted to know if this is a global issue with this Blackberry or a very specific problem with the phone that I own. Thanks in advance.

I have my Blackberry 8700C linked and it works very well. Have not lost the link at any time from what I see. Mine is also thru CIngular

  16. The fact that you are getting the right mileage on the hwy would make me believe that your car is fine. City is certainly going to be different for each of us. I like to read the fine print on the gas mileage section of a window sticker to see what's the lowest that it will go down to! When I'm in the city (small town), my average driving time is about 5 minutes, so my gas mileage sucks (usually around 13-15mpg when it's supposed to be much higher...like 18 or 19.). I know if I was driving more than 5 minutes where the car actually had a chance to warm up, my mileage would be much better. They test fuel economy in a lab: http://www.fueleconomy.gov/!Removed!/how_tested.shtml . LOL

Have 3800 miles on my LS460 and 19mpg around the neighborhood is not unusual if you keep you foot out of the pedal. You can quickly turn this into 10-12mpg if you are having too much fun. Easy, slow driving in the neighborhood does average 19+mpg. From Jacksonville for Amelia Island, last weekend, doing 70-80 yielded 28mpg. If I were worried about gas I would LOVE how this thing sips gas but at over $71k and a company gas card, I am having too much fun! :D

I love this thing more and more everyday! I love the little sticker on the rear passenger window that warns the owner not to expect much more than 20,000 on a set of tires. You can bet that is RIGHT! They need ed to stick it on the speedometer!

Did I say I love this car? I do!

  17. Hi Guys!! :)

Lexus spares no expense [so to speak] to show off new LS460.

Click on THIS to read the story.

    Craig!! :)

When the LS460 arrived at my local dealer, they moved every car out of the rather large showroom and placed the single LS460 in the middle with every spotlight in the entire showroom at it. The scene was quite dramatic. After being at my dealer for service on my LX for years I have never seen such a site.

I drove my new LS460 off the lot 4 days later!

  18. I have to say this IS one helluva of a car after all these year driving a LS400 and then you migrate to LS460. Whew ! I should say this car is car for the 21st Century. I have got my car shipped by air from clear lake houston to San Jose CA. Since I had my collegeaus take some snaps off the Aircraft Apron. I am sharing these snap for you guys as well. The toyota engineers have spent a lot on technology . And it is the quietest car i have come across.post-21708-1166609291_thumb.jpg

Agree 100%! Have about 2800 miles on my LS460 and love it more and more everyday. Still finding out things about this unit. I did not even know it had headlight washers! What a hoot.

After getting out of my slow and clumsy LX470, the LS460 feels like a rocket!

Fit and finish beats my neighbors 7 Series, not to mention horsepower. I took him for a little ride and he was pi$$ed that this little luxury car was WAY more powerful! :P
