  1. What I meant to say was that if the car was in "4", you would be driving in the equivalent of overdrive off (O/D Off as it appears on the dashboard).  Having said this, I see that he never put the car in D:

i was never in 5th gear... this car lacks power.... i tried it using vsc off and i tried it using the trans in 4th.... same crap...

Isn't he going to top out sooner (aka lower speed) if he's driving in only "4" and not using that last gear ratio?

The car would top out sooner because in gear 4, the driveshaft can only spin as fast as the engine as it is a 1:1 ratio.

In gear 5 (O/D), the ratio is lower (0.75:1) so the driveshaft spins faster than the engine does.

  2. A domestic (american) car would try to achieve quietness by adding sound deadening and speed by the biggest possible engine.

The Japanese achieve quiet by calculation and engineering perfection and speed by refinement of a good engine.

This car just continues to impress me more the more I learn about it. AMAZING!

    This is hilarious.....

these cars are a lot more costly than their american counterpart... even still....

i rather have a cts-v than a 430ls... my car is very quiet and i love it.. no denying it... but the engine still lacks greatly in fuel economy power and overall package size...

The LS1 is a far superior engine.. while the japanese spend their time designing on CD, which is awesome, they didn't continue that same pattern into the engine.

The engine lacks so many things its even horrible to describe... take a look.. after the DUMBESTIC ls1 came with coil on plug and ETC.. lexus came with the same on the 1uz fe and what did i just find out changing my spark plugs? it looks like my cruise control is not controlled by the PCM! jajajaja

you have to judge everything in its context. All in all... aside from interiors.. i find that many of the American engineering is superior to the japanese.

But... I will aggree with all of you to disagree as i know i will get flamed for this.. dont get me wrong... i own 4 ls400 a corvette.. 2 camaro, 2 c1500 truck. And by far i like the ls1 engine better and its a lot more FUEL EFFICIENT than ANY 1uzfe.

this engine is a gas guzzler.

Nice point on the LS1 however i did a bit of research and what i found is that the LS1 didnt debut until 1997...it's from a different era so you cant really compare the two can you.

A computer in 1989 was running on a 486dx processor @25Mhz. In 1997 we were at almost 300mhz. You cant really compare those either can you?

In that year they were adding VVT-i and what not to the Lexus.

I'm not trying to say the LS1 isnt an awesome engine...it sits with the best, i just dont think they can really be compared that way. And they werent built for the same application either. (speed vs luxury) And actually, the declared gas mileage is exactly the same on both (18/25).

    Just my take...

  3. This attachment is of a gen1 underbody. You can totally see the slight raindrop shape at the back and the smoothness of the undercarriage.

I suspect the newer ones are very similar, in fact they should be even better... Cd (drag coefficient) of 0.29 on 1st gen...down to 0.25 on the 3rd.

It really shows that the head designer of this car was an engineer...this is just rediculous! I remember reading that the rest of the design team was worried because he spent so much time on the aerodynamics of the car and not on other things. Little did they know that he was working on the most outstanding aspect of the car.

I just love how the Japanese get to where they are through careful thought and calculation rather than brute force.

  4. He might've had the gated shifter clicked over into the 4 position instead of the D?  On the LS with the gated shifter the 4 is equivalent to O/D Off of other Toyota/Lexus models.

I don't know if he had it in PWR or TRAC Off, but don't see how a system that controls initial wheelspin would affect the top speed of a car, negatively or positively.

    That's actually incorrect.

The gear before the last gear (in this case gear 4) is ALWAYS "drive" = 1:1 engine/transmission ratio. In a 4-gear O/D tranny, gear 3 is 1:1.

Gear 5 here is overdrive in which case the engine is at around 0.75:1. Being in gear 4 would lower the top speed drastically. It would even be near 140mph in gear 4.

  5. This is psycho...

This puppy used to be a UCF11...now it's...something else. Gives a new meaning to plastic surgery...or is that metal surgery.

    LINK: COMPLETE TRANSPLANT

ORIGINAL IN JAPANESE (if top link doesnt work)

I've seen the front done but never the back end.

Some people have a lot of time and money on their hands...

I have to say though...it doesnt look half bad does it?

Here's another that has a lot put into it too...

  6. the general result of too much oil is foaming which can result in substandard lubrication inside the tranny.

id get them to take some out if it is indeed that overfull.

keep in mind though the protocol for checking tranny oil.

preferably warm and with the engine running.

  7. Hi again,

I'm used to the Japanese version of the LS where there is a button for mirror heating right next to the mirror adjuster buttons. There is also a button to retract the mirrors in the same place on the '90.

As i remember it, on the Japanese one, when you press the mirror defrost button, the mirror vibrates for a few seconds to shake off ice and heats up to melt it off. B)

My question is, how do the heated mirrors work on the North American LS (90 - 94)?

Is it activated with the rear defroster or what?

  8. That's the sign that the system is in confusion and you should do a full reset.

Make sure the trunk switch is in the ON position. Then, remove the negative pole from the battery for a couple minutes to reset it.

If it still flashes after that you may have bigger problems such as a really heavy leak where the system sees that it's doing its dearest to raise the car to no avail, or the pump may not be working at all.

At this point you need to find some one who has done this before, (dealer or whoever) to troubleshoot the system, or you could find yourself a nice conversion kit.

    Good luck. Keep us updated.

  9. From what i've read, the cause of the bad light in the 90 - 92 LS is because of the lens.

My question is, is it possible to open the headlight (separate the lense) and (God forbid) polish or change the lens pattern to fix the problem? <_<

Outside of my crazy idea, what other option actually works?

I've seen a lot of stuff on here (I've been through about 300 threads about headlights on 3 different sites) and i havent seen anything that everyone agrees to work.

Any help for me? All i have thus far is silverstars but as i understand the problem, the lense will just screw them up too...

Anything useful that is actually conclusive?

I really hope this isnt considered a repost... :o

  10. Well it just so happens that i'm so computer savvy that i do it for work every single day. I'm a network administrator.

THe difference is that a .wav file is...a wav file and a standard cd player reads files in the .cdda format .cdda = cd digital audio.

that's the difference i was referring to.

if you burn a cd with wav files on it the changer wont be able to read it.

this thread is pretty pointless now.

reburn your cds so you have a copy that wont skip and you could even make a mix!...got it!

this thread happenned about 10 years ago when burners were new.
