  1. Very expensive for the age but they are excellent cars. but being the first generation of any car, there are problems that you will have to go through buying a 10+ old car, i dont care what it is. If i were you i would get a 98 or 99 ish toyota camry; it's pretty much the same size as the gs but will be newer. It will be the same price about and will be much less of a headache. I hav an 03 lexus rx300 and it has many problems. buying used cars other than for the looks is not a good idea. If you're getting it for the looks get it deffinetly. but if you just want a toyota/lexus in the 6-7k range that will be reliable, go for a newer toyota. Also keep in mind, the older the car the more miles on it. I would be surprised if you could find a 95 gs under 150 k miles. Lexus's are a toyota with an L on it pretty much, with only a few luxury features. and the parts on Lexus is more pricy then toyota for reasons unknown to anyone....I have only had a 2003 gs430, but it's assumed the 1st generation are just as good.

good luck in your decision...but in my opionion, with that price range, stay away from an older lexus and go with a newer toyota or honda.

This is not really a reasonable response. 93 is the first year - just because 93-97 is the first series of the vehicle does not mean that all of them will have problems. The changes to the 2nd generation were signifigant enough that you could apply the same logic. Would that mean that a 2005 would be unreliable? ;) Furthermore, unless you want a Supra, you will not find that engine or the RWD layout in any Toyota car. I have a 94 with 135k on it and the only major probkems I have had are a broken window regulator and a stripped starter. And whats this about "buying a used car other than for looks is not a good idea"? That just plain does not make sense. I would buy mine based on a combination of condition, performance, value and, yes, looks.

You can't go worng with a 1st generation GS - just make sure that you wait for the right one and mare sure that maintainance was done throughout its life.

  2. Hello All,

I am new to this forum. I currently own a 1994 GS300 and find it to be a great car. I have had it for a while and am thinking about purchasing a newer GS300 - probably a 2001+.

Anyway, I know that steering wheel audio controls are standard on the 430, but are not available from the factory with the GS300. It seems to be the same radio and same steering wheel housing - is there any way that the audio controls could be added to the 3? Does anyone know that this would take if it is possible?

Thanks - and the forum is great.

  3. Hi all,

the bulb that illuminates the temperature readout on my '94 GS is out. It went back on after I gave the side of the console a nice thwack, but is out again. I assume it is a bulb that is the problem, as everything else functions normally. Is this something that is difficult to change? Any ideas would be helpful.

    Thanks.

  4. I was just about to post the same  question....  so I will piggy back on this post

I have a 98 Gs300  when when  I am at 70mph the rpm is registering close to 4000rpm's which I think is running toooooooo  fast (drinking lots of gas).

1)When the car is idle/ stopped the rpm is 900, is that to high?

2)would a tune up correct the problem?

    3) is this damaging my engine?

    4) Is this something a  toyota repair center can handle.( since the prices are sooooooo much better vs the lexus dealership) ?

    Thanks In advance  ;)

I am not too sure what to say since I have no idea what engine speed you are running at - rpms is somewhat confusing. There are too many variables for me to deal with (revolutions per minutes) <_< How many revolustions in how many minutes? Maybe it is 6000 rpms @ 12000 revolutions for every 2 minutes.

Either way, 4000 rpm is a little high for 70. Is your overdrive off/in 4th? 4000 rpm should not damage your engine though, but I would think that it is something you need to have checked out. I would not go as far as to guess the problem without more info though. My GS3 (albeit first gen/ 4 speed) runs at about 2800 rpm at that speed (in 4th/OD)
